Essential Functions
- Affords assistance to the pool manager, or assumes responsibility for all facilities and personnel at a municipal swimming pool in their absence.
- Safeguards the opening and closing of the pool and maintains sanitary and safe conditions.
- Enforces all rules and regulations, maintains discipline, anticipates hazardous conditions, and takes precautionary measures.
- Rescues swimmers in distress, renders first aid, and performs Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.
- Trains lifeguards and organizes and conducts swimming meets, diving classes, and swim and diving meets.
- Maintains required attendance, financial records, and reports; prepares staff work schedules; and organizes and conducts special aquatic programs.
Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge of lifeguarding, lifesaving, and first aid techniques; laws relative to the safe and sanitary operation of a pool; and the mechanical operation of filtering, backwashing, pumping, and chlorination equipment.
- Ability to oversee the efficient and safe operation of a large municipal pool; supervise the work of other employees; enforce pool rules and regulations and maintain discipline; be alert, attentive, exercise discretion and good judgment; make immediate and proper decisions in cases of emergency; prepare clear and accurate reports; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, and the public.
Education/Training
- Graduation from high school.
- One season's experience as a lifeguard and instructor, equivalent to 320 working hours.
Special Conditions & Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age at time of appointment.
- Must be in good physical condition.
- A valid California Class “C” driver’s license or equivalent.
- A valid First Aid Certificate which meets Emergency Medical Service Authority requirements.
- A valid Water Safety Instructor’s Certificate.
- A valid Lifeguard Certificate from authorized providers.
- A valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Communicable Disease Certificates from authorized providers, as determined by the Management Services department, within two weeks of appointment.
