General Description
Durham County Library is seeking an innovative and forward-thinking library professional to lead the Adult Services Unit at the Southwest Regional Library. The Senior Librarian will oversee adult services, including resources, programs, and outreach. This role operates with significant independence under the supervision of the Southwest Regional Library Manager. While primarily based at the Southwest Regional Library, the selected candidate may also be assigned to support other library locations as needed, including participation in a regular Sunday rotation at the Main Library.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervises, directs, and evaluates Adult Service staff, processes employee concerns and problems, directs work, counsels, disciplines, and completes employee performance appraisals.
- Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
- Performs professional and administrative library work by developing and providing library-based services and programs that support the library's strategic plan.
- Coordinates adult programming through planning, scheduling, delegation, partnerships, contract development, and facilitation.
- Duties also include providing services via phone, online chat, email and in person while providing a high and consistent level of customer service.
- Works at the information desk, answers research, informational, reader's advisory, and technology queries with a high degree of accuracy.
- Works at the circulation and children's desks as part of the cross-scheduling training as assigned.
- Assists library patrons with computer use and library technology.
- Records program statistics, compiles and submits monthly reports.
- Prepares and monitors unit budget.
- Develops proactive relationships with appropriate community organizations.
- Serves on the regional library management team and other committees as assigned.
- Serves as Manager on Duty (MOD) one evening per week, on a weekend rotation, and other times as needed.
- Provides excellent customer service in a team-based environment.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of the purposes, principles, and practices of public library administration.
- Knowledge of the principles and methods of supervision, management, and training and should possess demonstrated experience supervising professionals and support staff.
- Knowledge of various types of informational materials and methods of organizing materials and information.
- Knowledge of current and emerging technologies coupled with a working knowledge of both library computer systems and electronic resources and databases.
- Experience planning, implementing, and evaluating programs for a wide variety of customers.
- Ability to analyze problems, recommend solutions, and make decisions.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to work pleasantly and effectively with people of all ages and to maintain effective working relationships with the public and other employees.
- Ability to understand and interpret library rules, policies and procedures.
- Commitment to excellence in customer service.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
- Master's Degree in Library Science or related discipline.
- One year of professional library or related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Supervisory experience and considerable public library experience.
- Spanish language and speaking skills.
Pay and Schedule
- Hiring Range: $59,879 - $63,570.
- Full-Time, 37.5 hrs/week, Non-Exempt.
