Essential Functions
- Presents natural history maritime history and science programs to schools, groups and Scouts.
- Performs interactive educational history and science programs including tabletop activities, demonstrations, workshops, overnights, outreach, marine touch tank and exhibits interpretation.
- Has the ability to handle live animals and instruct individuals in the handling of live animals.
- Affords assistance with program development and volunteer training.
- Interacts with guest in a friendly, helpful and positive manner.
- Maintains thorough knowledge of all Maritime Center facilities, exhibits, programming and policies.
- Affords assistance to guests having special problems, questions or complaints.
- Solves visitors’ problems requiring immediate attention and handles stressful situations in a calm and pleasant manner.
Work Hours
- Operating hours from Labor Day to Memorial Day are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. Sunday
- Operating hours from Memorial Day to Labor Day are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Sunday
- Hours will vary due to special events, cruise ship activity, and holidays.
Education/Experience
- Requires a minimum of graduation from high school or equivalent supplemented by one year of college level course work and one year of experience in teaching, performing arts, research, or a related field.
- Additional Information & Requirements: Successful candidates will have completed advanced college course work in science, education, history, or a related field; possess exceptional public speaking skills, organization skills, and be detail oriented. Candidate should feel comfortable being part of an ensemble team.

Retirement
- If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
- If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
Tuition Assistance Program
- The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education.
- Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply.
- The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
