Senior Lead M&A Consultant
About the role
Senior Principal in Marsh's HR M&A Advisory Services team (People and Investments) based in New York City or Chicago. Hybrid role requiring at least three days per week in the office or on site with clients. The role leads the human capital agenda on significant transactions, advises senior leaders, orchestrates delivery across Marsh's People and Investments businesses, and uses AI as a core tool.
That seems fine.Responsibilities
- Orchestrate sales and delivery across Marsh People and Investments' Health and Benefits, Investments and Retirement, Workforce and Rewards, and Global Benefits Management businesses and the broader Marsh enterprise to provide an integrated client experience.
- Originate and expand work through relationship development with corporate development teams and private equity sponsors, owning revenue, margin and delivery quality.
- Lead opportunities from identification through pursuit and close as a strategic advisor and relationship builder.
- Own the human capital agenda on complex transactions end to end (acquisitions, divestitures, carve‑outs, joint ventures, private equity platform and add‑on deals).
- Frame the people questions that determine whether a deal delivers its thesis and translate them into a defensible value case, synergy plan and integration roadmap.
- Advise senior business leaders, CHROs, CFOs and private equity deal teams and operating partners on transaction pace, providing a clear point of view on critical human capital value drivers.
- Use AI as a core tool of the craft: accelerate data‑room review and document synthesis, model workforce cost and synergy scenarios, convert repeatable diligence work into practice accelerators.
- Develop colleagues in new ways of working by coaching teams on AI‑enabled delivery, setting standards for review and source verification, and clarifying where deal materiality and client confidentiality require human judgment.
- Shape the practice point of view on how transactions are changing (deal structures, workforce composition, regulatory environment) and take that view to market.
- Lead and develop consultants and engagement managers, building bench strength for the practice.
Requirements
- 12+ years of professional services experience with a track record of leading transactions rather than supporting them.
- Demonstrated management consulting capability: structuring ambiguous problems, working hypothesis‑first, reaching defensible recommendations under commercial and deal‑timeline pressure.
- Executive presence with business leadership (CHRO, CFO, private equity audiences) and a record of being retained for the next transaction.
- Working fluency with AI in delivery: direct experience directing AI‑enabled analysis and holding teams to standards of accuracy, source verification and appropriate handling of client data.
- Working knowledge of the M&A lifecycle and core HR disciplines (total rewards, benefits, HR technology, workforce planning) sufficient to lead the work and challenge specialists.
- Commercial ownership: origination, proposal leadership and accountability for revenue, margin and delivery quality.
- Proven ability to build, lead and develop teams in a matrixed environment.
- Willingness to travel as deal activity requires.
Qualifications
- Relevant professional certifications such as CCP, GRP, CEBS, PROSCI or PMP.
- MBA or other advanced degree.
Skills
- Track record of building strong relationships with senior leaders to drive sales and expansion opportunities.
- Hands‑on building with AI tools (prompting, scripting, constructing agentic workflows) beyond using AI‑enabled products.
- Depth in one or more transaction‑critical HR disciplines (pension and post‑retirement obligations, equity and change‑in‑control exposure, benefit plan design, workforce cost modeling).
- Experience across corporate and private‑equity clients, including platform, add‑on and sponsor‑to‑sponsor dynamics.
- Cross‑border transaction experience (works councils, TUPE, collective bargaining agreements, multi‑jurisdiction separation).
- Carve‑out and separation depth (transition service agreements, standalone cost build‑up, Day 1 readiness).
- Fluency with HRIS and people data (Workday, SuccessFactors or equivalent) and ability to assemble workforce data into decision‑ready analysis on a deal clock.
Benefits
- Health and welfare benefits.
- Tuition assistance.
- 401(k) savings and other retirement programs.
- Employee assistance programs.

The applicable base salary range for this role is $169,000 to $338,500, with base pay determined by experience, skills, training, location, certifications, education and any applicable minimum‑wage requirements. The position may be eligible for performance‑based incentives.
Schedule
Hybrid role requiring at least three days per week in the office or on site with clients; office‑based teams identify at least one “anchor day” per week when the full team works together in person.
