About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Java Software Engineer to join a collaborative Agile development team supporting enterprise-scale applications and services. This role is ideal for a software engineer who is passionate about building scalable, cloud-based solutions using modern technologies including Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, AWS, and SQL/NoSQL databases. As a key contributor, you will participate in the design, development, testing, and deployment of high-quality software solutions while collaborating with cross-functional teams to solve complex business challenges. The ideal candidate combines strong hands-on coding experience with architectural thinking, a commitment to Test-Driven Development (TDD), and a passion for continuous learning and knowledge sharing.
This opportunity is open to individuals located in the Minneapolis, MN and/or surrounding areas. The role requires access to reliable internet and the ability to manage all responsibilities from a home office. The project hours of operations will be Monday – Friday, in which candidate must be available to work an 8-hour shift between 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Central Time.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable Java-based applications and microservices.
- Follow Agile development principles and actively participate in sprint planning, standups, retrospectives, and backlog refinement sessions.
- Review functional and technical requirements, validate acceptance criteria, and ensure quality delivery before QA handoff.
- Contribute to technical solution design and architecture discussions for new features and enhancements.
- Participate in pair programming, peer reviews, and collaborative problem-solving activities.
- Take initiative to identify technical improvements and implement creative solutions for complex engineering challenges.
- Continuously improve code quality through automated testing, refactoring, and adherence to development standards.
- Share knowledge with team members and contribute to a culture of continuous learning.
Deliverables or Project Scope
- Develop and deliver production-ready software features using Java and Spring Boot.
- Build and support event-driven integrations utilizing Kafka and messaging technologies.
- Create scalable database integrations leveraging both SQL and NoSQL platforms.
- Contribute to cloud-native application development and deployment within AWS environments.
- Produce technical designs and implementation documentation for assigned features.
- Deliver high-quality, low-defect code with strong unit and integration test coverage.
- Support CI/CD processes and production deployment activities.
- Consistently deliver sprint commitments while maintaining engineering excellence.

Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 6+ years of software engineering experience.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience with Java or other JVM-based languages.
- 3+ years of experience developing applications using Spring Boot.
- 3+ years of experience working with SQL and NoSQL databases such as MongoDB or Cassandra.
- 3+ years of experience with database integrations and technical architecture concepts.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing cloud-native applications in AWS.
- Knowledge of open-source technologies such as Apache and Tomcat.
- Experience implementing and supporting Jenkins CI/CD pipelines.
- Familiarity with Linux and macOS operating systems.
- Proven ability to influence technical design and architectural decisions.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
- Passion for mentoring teammates and sharing technical knowledge.
Pay
Compensation for this role is determined by BCforward and varies by location. The hourly range for this position is as follows:
- California: $53 to $60
- Colorado: $53 to $60
- Cleveland: $53 to $60
- District of Columbia: $53 to $60
- Illinois: $53 to $60
- Maryland: $53 to $60
- Massachusetts: $53 to $60
- Minnesota: $53 to $60
