Position Summary

Apple is seeking a Java Developer with a strong Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) mindset to join a high-performing engineering team in Sunnyvale, CA. This role combines backend Java development with cloud infrastructure, reliability engineering, and production support responsibilities. The ideal candidate will be passionate about building scalable, highly available applications while driving operational excellence across cloud-native environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable Java-based backend services and microservices.
  • Build reliable, resilient, and high-performance applications using Java and Spring Boot.
  • Partner with development and operations teams to improve application reliability, scalability, and observability.
  • Deploy, manage, and troubleshoot applications running on Kubernetes in AWS environments.
  • Automate operational tasks, deployments, and monitoring to improve system reliability.
  • Investigate production issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement permanent fixes.
  • Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines to support efficient software delivery.
  • Optimize application performance, availability, and capacity planning.
  • Work with MongoDB to design schemas, optimize queries, and manage data access.
  • Implement monitoring, alerting, and logging using modern observability tools.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and incident response activities when required.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams in an Agile development environment.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in Java backend development.
  • Strong experience with Java 11/17 and Spring Boot.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS services such as EC2, ECS/EKS, Lambda, S3, IAM, CloudWatch, VPC, and RDS.
  • Strong Kubernetes experience, including deployment, scaling, troubleshooting, and container orchestration.
  • Experience working with MongoDB in production environments.
  • Good understanding of RESTful APIs and microservices architecture.
  • Experience with Docker and containerized applications.
  • Experience with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or similar.
  • Strong knowledge of Linux/Unix systems.
  • Experience with monitoring and observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, ELK, Datadog, or similar.
  • Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills in distributed systems.
  • Experience using Git and Agile/Scrum methodologies.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) role.
  • Experience supporting large-scale, mission-critical production systems.
  • Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or CloudFormation).
  • Experience with Kafka or other messaging platforms.
  • Familiarity with security best practices in cloud-native environments.
  • Experience working in large enterprise environments, preferably with consumer-facing applications.

Pay Range

The pay range for this position is $65/hr. to 75/hr. The specific compensation for this position will be determined by several factors, including the scope, complexity, and location of the role, as well as the cost of labor in the market; the skills, education, training, credentials, and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment.
