Senior Java Backend Developer

About the role
Design and develop secure, scalable, and high-performing backend applications that support critical business operations. You will be a valued member of the engineering team and work collaboratively with product managers, architects, DevOps engineers, database administrators, and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver reliable data-driven solutions.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop robust backend services using Java and relational database technologies to support scalable enterprise applications.
- Build and optimize data access layers, SQL queries, and database structures to ensure high application performance and reliability.
- Develop secure APIs and integrations that enable seamless communication between distributed systems and data platforms.
- Collaborate with product, architecture, and engineering teams to translate business requirements into maintainable technical solutions.
- Troubleshoot production issues, implement automated testing, and drive continuous improvements to enhance application quality and operational stability.
Requirements
- 7–10 years of experience designing and developing enterprise applications using Java and relational database technologies.
- Strong expertise with PostgreSQL, PL/SQL, MySQL, SQL optimization, data modeling, and performance tuning.
- Experience developing secure RESTful APIs and backend services in distributed application environments.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot production issues, analyze database performance, and implement effective solutions.
- Experience with software testing practices, including unit testing, integration testing, and quality assurance methodologies.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills with the ability to work effectively across cross-functional teams.
- Experience working within Agile software development environments.
Skills
- Experience modernizing legacy applications and database solutions.
- Knowledge of database indexing strategies, transaction management, and data consistency best practices.
- Exposure to DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and deployment automation.
- Experience supporting high-tech or technology-driven business domains.
- Ability to mentor peers and promote engineering best practices across teams.
Pay
The annual salary for this position is between $68,000 – $112,000 depending on experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate. This position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual incentive program, based on performance and subject to the terms of Cognizant’s applicable plans.
