Senior ITS Engineer
About the role
This role is part of HDR’s Advanced Technology for Surface Transportation (ATST) business class, which primarily serves government agencies. This position will also be responsible for building and maintaining client relationships and helping clients identify and implement innovative transportation technology solutions.
Responsibilities
- Lead planning, design, integration, deployment, and operations of ITS and transportation technology systems including communications networks, ATMS/TMC systems, field devices, corridor technology solutions, traffic signal systems, and roadway lighting.
- Lead and support development and implementation of TSMO, connected vehicle, digital infrastructure, and emerging mobility initiatives for state and local agencies.
- Lead the preparation of PS&E packages, systems engineering documentation, ITS architectures, and technical analyses for transportation technology projects.
- Serve as a technical resource and client-facing representative for transportation technology initiatives regionally and nationally.
- Support project delivery activities including scope development, budgeting, scheduling, coordination, and client communication.
- Establish client relationships and have significant roles in marketing, contractual, design, and production activities.
- Coordinate project staffing and workloads with business class leadership.
- Implement QA/QC procedures.
- Aid in the development of Federal USDOT Grant applications for government agencies.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree
- Minimum of 10 years' experience in ITS and traffic engineering for urban and rural highways, major and minor interchanges and intersections
- Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered.
Preferred Qualifications
- Diverse experience in related fields such as toll roads, roadway design, or construction
- Interest in client development, mentoring, and growing transportation technology services
- Experience working with state DOTs, local agencies, Federal government
- Active role in professional organizations
- Familiarity with Traffic Engineering concepts like signal timing, ATSPMs, adaptive traffic control systems, priority systems, and traffic-responsive systems
- Understanding of fiber optic networks
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Interest in or progress toward Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) certification
- Interest in data analytics
Required Qualifications
- Knowledge of regulations of state and federal transportation agencies
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office
- Experience using HCS, CORSIM, Synchro/SIM Traffic and other software packages
- Strong oral and written communication skills, presentation skills and ability to work in a team environment
