Senior ITS Engineer

CDM Smith is a multi-discipline engineering and architectural firm specializing in large-scale water and wastewater plant design, transit facilities, industrial facilities, office space design, federal facilities, facility planning, and condition assessment work.

About the Role

As a Senior Project Engineer specializing in transportation-related systems—including traffic signals, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), lighting, and electrical—you will join a growing, collaborative, multidisciplinary team of technical experts. This role involves working on challenging projects within the transportation business portfolio, including program management, system design, review, oversight, and advisory services. Preferred locations for this position are Carbondale, IL; Chicago, IL; Lisle, IL; Springfield, IL; or St. Louis, MO. This position requires travel to Collinsville, IL approximately once per week.

Responsibilities

• Oversee and collaborate with internal, client, and external consultant staff to review and/or design, developing final construction contract documents.
• Develop building design criteria directly with clients.
• Lead preparation of presentation materials and deliver presentations.
• Lead development and coordination of electrical systems design and construction contract documents with multi-discipline engineering staff.
• Mentor project engineers and junior staff on projects.
• Determine construction materials, technologies, and methodologies for detailing.
• Prepare and edit technical specifications.
• Confirm compliance with standards and requirements/regulations, including coordination with IDOT and agencies having jurisdiction.
• Serve as Quality Control and independent reviewer for other consultants' work.
• Assist in development of project budgets and schedules, both internal and external.
• Monitor projects through letting/close-out.
• Support sales, meet with clients, and serve as a Project Technical Lead for Electrical/ITS-driven projects.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Transportation, or Structural Engineering or a related discipline.
• Professional Engineering (PE) license.
• 10 years of related experience.
• Expert technical knowledge and design application experience.
• Expert knowledge of technologies and methodologies in the use of construction materials.
• Expert knowledge of CAD systems/software, preferably MicroStation.
• Expert knowledge of IDOT, CDOT, IL Tollway standards and specifications.
• Expert knowledge of Bluebeam Revu.
• Proficiency with basic business office software (Word, Excel, etc.).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong critical thinking, technical writing, and verbal communication abilities.
• Domestic and/or international travel may be required (20% - 40%).
• An appropriate and valid driver’s license is required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Subject matter expertise in planning, design, and construction oversight of transportation systems, including traffic signals, lighting, and ITS.
• Experience signing and sealing project documents.
• Strong task management skills and team-minded interpersonal skills.
• Prior experience with systems engineering or a strong understanding of ITS systems integration.
• Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.

Pay

Pay range: $87,131.00 – $152,485.00 USD. CDM Smith is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. This range is a good-faith estimate representative of all experience levels for the geographic location assigned to the position. Salary is determined by role, function, relevant work experience, skills, required certifications, education/training, and geographic location.
