About the Role

The NYS DOCCS Office of Special Investigations (OSI) is seeking qualified candidates for consideration to serve as a Senior Investigator in one of its five divisions with cross-over and collaboration among divisions:

  • Public Integrity Division (PID): Investigates allegations of violations of the Department’s policies and criminal laws, including staff misconduct (physical and sexual abuse of incarcerated individuals), unattended deaths, unauthorized relationships, harassment, theft, fraud, and escape plots.
  • Criminal Investigations Division (CID): Investigates criminal activities associated with NYS DOCCS, such as violent acts, threats, gun and drug distribution, contraband smuggling, and extremist or terrorist activities. Participates in task forces and intelligence centers.
  • Canine Division: Utilizes specially trained canines to detect dangerous drugs and contraband electronics (e.g., cellular phones) to interdict controlled substances and other contraband.
  • Fugitive Investigations Division (FID): Specializes in fugitive apprehensions and returning fugitives to New York.
  • Intake, Training, and Analysis Division (ITAD): Processes thousands of complaints annually, trains OSI staff, and performs data analysis to identify issues, prioritize resources, and provide tactical support to investigations.

Office assignments and division placement are determined based on the needs of the Department and OSI. Travel is required.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise approximately five to eight Investigators conducting investigations within the assigned division and geographic region.
  • Guide Investigators with caseloads, review reports, and oversee investigative activities.
  • Lead small groups conducting investigations and independently perform investigative activities.
  • Ensure OSI investigations are thorough, timely, fair, and compliant with all relevant policies and laws.
  • Collaborate with superiors, peers, subordinates, facility staff, and external stakeholders.
  • Participate in special operations, such as surprise inspections, parole absconder details, and monitoring operations.
  • Report directly to an Assistant Deputy Chief Investigator.

Requirements

  • At least four years of investigative or law enforcement experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities.
  • Relevant advanced educational degrees (above high school or GED) may substitute for investigative experience on a two-years education for one-year experience basis (e.g., an associate degree substitutes for one year, a bachelor’s degree for two years).
  • Knowledge of applicable laws and high standards of personal integrity, ethics, fairness, character, judgment, and respect for others.
  • Must possess or obtain appropriate licensure and certifications, including peace officer qualification to carry a firearm.
  • Ability to travel as required.
  • Must pass background checks.

Locations

Positions are available in all OSI Offices: Albany, Long Island City, Wallkill, Fishkill, Groveland, Dannemora, Utica, Rochester, Ogdensburg, or Buffalo. Office assignments are based on the needs of OSI and the Department.
