About the role

The Chicago office of SmithGroup is seeking a Senior Interior Designer to join our Longevity Living™ Studio and create environments that are elegant, functional, and embrace holistic wellness—spaces that celebrate life at every stage. Our work spans the full spectrum of Longevity Living™ typologies, including active adult, independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing and a wide array of amenity spaces.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design efforts across multiple SmithGroup offices for all stages of a project, including leadership with the client, contractors, and internal team.
  • Collaborate closely with clients, understanding their vision and translating it into compelling and functional environments.
  • Develop and present design concepts that embrace holistic wellness with residential and hospitality principles.
  • Assist in management of projects through developing project scope, schedules, job production, quality, and fee management.
  • Lead programming, conceptualization, development and integration of strategic design solutions.
  • Consult with manufacturers, research and evaluate materials.
  • Document architectural and interior design drawings.
  • Assist in construction administration including responding to RFI’s, preparing sketches and addendums (CCD’s), and visiting the construction site to gather information and/or prepare a punch list.
  • Oversee the design work of others to ensure integrated and cohesive design, supervise preparation of drawings for all project phases, and ensure guidelines, quality control, standards and details.
  • Lead all phases of the design process including programming and developing workplace standards.
  • Mentor junior staff and participate in performance coaching.
  • Participate in the recruitment and interviewing process as requested.

Requirements

  • Proven experience designing for senior living environments, including independent and assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and amenity spaces.
  • Strong background in residential and hospitality design.
  • Exceptional ability to lead teams and inspire clients through storytelling and design vision.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Interior Design or equivalent.
  • Minimum 15 years of related experience.
  • LEED AP preferred.
  • Architectural or Interior Design registration required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Revit, AutoCAD, SketchUp, Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign programs.
  • Technical competence and proven experience in schematic design through construction documents.
  • The ability to contribute and participate in an interdisciplinary team environment.

Pay

While we may ultimately pay more or less than a posted salary range, at the time of posting the anticipated salary range for this position is $95,000 to $111,000 annually and you are eligible for a performance-based bonus each year.
