Senior Infrastructure Design Engineer

Blue Cross NC is seeking a highly skilled and forward-thinking infrastructure leader to serve as our next Senior Infrastructure Design Engineer. This is a highly visible engineering role at the intersection of enterprise infrastructure, cloud modernization, healthcare technology, and operational excellence. As a key technical contributor, you will help shape the architecture and future direction of critical infrastructure platforms that support our health plan operations, member experiences, and business growth. This engineer will partner across Enterprise Architecture, Application Development, Security, Operations, and Infrastructure teams to design scalable, resilient, and secure technology solutions while driving innovation across both traditional and cloud-based environments. What You'll Do: Lead Infrastructure Architecture & DesignDesign and deliver complex infrastructure solutions across compute, network, platform, middleware, database, telephony, and cloud environments.Serve as a technical leader responsible for evaluating current and future infrastructure requirements to ensure scalability, resiliency, and operational readiness.Define technical standards, engineering practices, and architectural roadmaps that align with enterprise technology objectives. Drive Technology Strategy & InnovationLead technology lifecycle planning, capacity management, and infrastructure modernization initiatives.Evaluate emerging technologies and conduct proof-of-concept efforts to guide infrastructure investment decisions.Present infrastructure strategies, technology recommendations, and emerging trends to technology and business leadership. Partner Across the EnterpriseCollaborate with Architecture, Application Development, Security, Operations, and business stakeholders to design solutions that meet evolving enterprise needs.Provide expert consultation on infrastructure decisions impacting application performance, reliability, and business outcomes.Partner closely with vendor organizations to ensure infrastructure solutions align with architectural standards and long-term strategy. Ensure Operational ExcellenceSupport the engineering, deployment, and optimization of critical infrastructure services.Provide expert guidance during complex production incidents and major technology events.Establish performance standards and operational best practices that improve reliability, efficiency, and service delivery. Develop Technical TalentMentor engineers and technical team members by providing architectural guidance, technical leadership, and knowledge sharing.Foster a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, collaboration, and engineering excellence. What You'll Bring: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field and 5 years of relevant experience. OR 7+ years of related infrastructure engineering experience in lieu of a degree. Additionally, successful candidates will bring:Experience designing and supporting complex enterprise infrastructure environments.Strong knowledge of cloud and on-premises infrastructure technologies.Demonstrated ability to architect scalable, resilient, and secure infrastructure solutions.Experience collaborating across multiple technology disciplines and influencing technical decision-making.Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities with the ability to manage competing priorities.Excellent communication skills and the ability to translate technical concepts into business outcomes. Bonus Points: Experience with Tomcat, Spring Boot, and WebSphere Application Server.Experience supporting TriZetto Facets environments.Familiarity with scripting and automation technologies including Python, Perl, Korn Shell, or similar tools.Exposure to AI-enabled productivity and engineering tools such as Microsoft Copilot, Claude, Gemini, or OpenAI solutions.Experience with infrastructure modernization, automation, and cloud transformation initiatives.Strong customer service mindset and the ability to navigate complex technical environments with adaptability and professionalism.
