Senior Industrial Hygienist I, II, or III
Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) is seeking a Senior Industrial Hygienist I, II, or III to be based in Aiken, SC on the Savannah River Site (SRS). The role involves recognizing, evaluating, eliminating, and controlling occupational and environmental factors or stresses arising from the workplace that may cause sickness, impaired health, or significant discomfort among workers or citizens of the community.
About the Role
This is a multilevel posting. Candidates selected will be offered a position level (I, II, or III) commensurate with their experience and qualifications.
Responsibilities
- Conducts monitoring of workplace environments by analyzing work operations, processes, materials, equipment, and work habits of employees.
- Performs advanced assessments of work exposures; designs basic to complex exposure monitoring strategies.
- Measures the magnitude of exposure to workers from environmental hazards by selecting or devising methods and instrumentation; presents conclusions and recommendations to management.
- Educates employees on practices, precautions, and procedures.
- Audits programs and conditions at assigned facilities; provides written reports of findings with recommendations for improvement.
- Incorporates a complete understanding of Industrial Hygiene (IH) practices into problem-solving and programmatic planning for complex technical requirements.
- Performs comprehensive IH practices by anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling environmental factors or stresses in the workplace.
- Provides limited guidance and direction to less senior IH professionals.
- Develops and qualifies programs on tasks concurrent with other phases of assignment.
- Ensures compliance with technical regulatory requirements.
- Develops alternate solutions to existing problems and evaluates proposals.
- Prepares manuals and other documents supporting or publicizing technical efforts.
- Leads implementation of total quality and continuous improvement initiatives within the group.
Additional Responsibilities for Senior Industrial Hygienist II (Grade 68)
- Applies conventional and advanced IH practices for assigned facility or programmatic areas.
- Provides IH consultation for challenging coordination or oversight requirements with problem-solving and programmatic planning.
- Supports facilities with monitoring programs, procedures, Assisted Hazards Analysis (AHA), and work package reviews.
- Assists management in compliance with technical and regulatory requirements.
- Designs and conducts comprehensive exposure monitoring strategies for moderately complex to highly complex issues.
- Provides briefings on hazardous chemicals and performs on-the-job and job performance measurement (OJT/JPM) training.
- Serves as a subject matter expert for specific IH disciplines under 10 CFR 851, OSHA, ACGIH, EPA, and state programs.
- Communicates results and objectives verbally and in writing to customers, colleagues, and management.
- Enhances expertise through participation in technical societies and stays updated on industry best practices.
Additional Responsibilities for Senior Industrial Hygienist III (Grade 69)
- Educates employees and management on practices, precautions, and procedures.
- Takes a substantive role in compliance with technical and regulatory requirements.
- Demonstrates commitment to quality concepts through active participation in department initiatives.
Requirements
- Master’s degree or higher in Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, or related physical or biological science; or
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline such as Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, or related physical or biological science with relevant experience; or
- Bachelor’s degree in a non-technical discipline with relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Understands and applies advanced technical knowledge of IH regulations, standard concepts, practices, principles, and techniques.
- Demonstrated technical expertise as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in an integrated program (e.g., respirators, confined space work, field instrumentation).
- Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP).
- Degree from an ABET-accredited institution for industrial Radiological work experience.
- Familiarity with infrastructure, roles, and responsibilities as an IH representative integrated into facility operations.
- Proficiency in Respiratory Protection Program requirements for all devices employed within the DOE Complex.

Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC), a prime contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy, manages the Savannah River Site’s Liquid Waste operations contract. SRMC is responsible for the closure of waste tanks, operation of the Defense Waste Processing Facility, tank farm operations, and associated production and disposal facilities.

Pay
Annual salary range: $76,704.00 – $170,076.00. Exceptions to this range may be applied on a case-by-case basis considering education, experience, and skill needs of the organization.
