About the role
Under the direction of the Division of Engineering Services Chief of Staff, the Senior Industrial Hygienist (Sr IH) leads strategic improvements to the Statewide Laboratory Safety Program (SLSP), coordinating with stakeholders across Caltrans. The Sr. IH serves as the SLSP’s technical lead, overseeing policies on lab safety practices, CalOSHA compliance, hazardous waste, and chemical hygiene. The incumbent drives updates to the Caltrans Laboratory Safety Manual and Lab Chemical Hygiene Plan while supporting SLSP operations, including records management, quality assurance, and lab oversight.
This position may be eligible for telework at the discretion of the Department, based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location in Sacramento County as needed. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and applicable CalHR regulations or bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
Responsibilities
- Lead strategic improvements to the Statewide Laboratory Safety Program (SLSP).
- Coordinate with stakeholders across Caltrans to enhance lab safety practices.
- Serve as the technical lead for SLSP, overseeing policies on CalOSHA compliance, hazardous waste, and chemical hygiene.
- Drive updates to the Caltrans Laboratory Safety Manual and Lab Chemical Hygiene Plan.
- Support SLSP operations, including records management, quality assurance, and lab oversight.
Requirements
- Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a State-owned or leased vehicle.
- Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required. Failure to submit an SOQ will disqualify candidates from the hiring process. The SOQ must:
- Address each question in the same order as provided.
- Be typed, no more than two pages in length, using 12-point Arial font.
- Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Senior Industrial Hygienist exam. Candidates without current eligibility (e.g., new to state civil service) must be on the state examination list.
- If basing eligibility on education, unofficial transcript(s)/diploma must be included for verification. Applicants with foreign transcripts/degrees must provide a U.S. equivalency evaluation report.

Pay
$10,630.00 - $14,203.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
Schedule
Permanent, Full Time. Hybrid work arrangement available.
