About the role

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. This team supports all AWS data centers and the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure customers have continual access to innovation. As a Senior Industrial Designer, you will be embedded in the modular rack-design process, working closely with Mechanical, Electrical, Structural, Networking, and Hardware Design Engineers to develop global standards and deliver consistent integrated racking systems to AWS data centers.

Responsibilities

  • Own development of racking systems from concept geometry or sketches to production-intent 3D models.
  • Produce clear and concise racking documentation such as detailed design specifications, drawings, white papers, wiring schematics, diagrams, and reports.
  • Drive standardization in data center designs to safeguard implementation of the Global Racking Basis of Design (BoD).
  • Develop strategic solutions that meet or exceed quality requirements while staying within budgetary constraints.
  • Capture requirements and translate aspirational company or customer goals into well-defined, achievable, and testable specifications.
  • Define project scope and provide technical support for innovation, research, and development projects.
  • Collaborate with regional vendors and manufacturers to specify and factory test racking systems.
  • Design racking that accommodates electrical, networking, and fire protection integration.
  • Perform structural design of racking, connections, and anchorage to account for global codes, loading, seismic, and anchorage needs.
  • Conduct structural analysis using finite element analysis (FEA) and structural engineering software (e.g., RISA, SAP, ETABS, TEDDs).
  • Evaluate lateral force, seismic restraint, and dynamic load requirements.
  • Apply experience with modular construction and prefabricated systems.
  • Interpret manufacturing tolerances and fabrication processes.
  • Travel up to 25% of the time.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of industrial or commercial engineering experience in mission-critical facilities, including data centers, power generation, or oil and gas facilities.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field.
  • Knowledge of building codes and regulations for your region.
  • 6+ years of design, construction, operations, or facility maintenance experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineering or Architectural License.
  • Experience carrying design concepts through exploration, development, and deployment or mass production.
  • Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents.
  • Proficiency with CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, BIM 360).
  • Experience using web-based and other software tools for calculation and data processing.
  • Experience researching new designs, technologies, and construction methods for mission-critical equipment and facilities.

Skills

  • Strong technical communication.
  • Proficiency with CAD/BIM tools (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, Tekla, SolidWorks).
  • Understanding of safety, reliability, constructability, and lifecycle considerations for industrial structures.
  • Strong multidisciplinary collaboration.
