Senior Engineer, Data Center Engineering
About the Role
The Senior Engineer, Data Center Engineering (SDCE) ensures all activities in the Data Center & Access Centers conform to Data Center procedures and industry best practices. The role involves executing project-based work, tasks from incident or workflow management tools, and ensuring compliance with Change Control rules. The SDCE advises and instructs Operations Engineers, manages colocation clients and third parties, maintains security processes, and updates Data Center management tools (DCIM) or workflow/incident management tools like Service Now. Additionally, the SDCE estimates and executes Data Center capacity management for cables, power, and space, collaborating with DCO or vendors to schedule and verify project work for ICE and ICE colocation customers.
Responsibilities
- Support Data Center Engineers and act as an escalation point for the team.
- Maintain access control lists and check access reports daily.
- Maintain process and procedure documentation for all aspects of data center operations.
- Ensure all MACs (Moves, Adds, Changes) are executed and documented in the DCIM.
- Be flexible in working patterns to maintain SLAs.
- Install, relocate, and recover Network, Server, and Storage hardware to manufacturer standards and industry best practices.
- Repair hardware to major component level (e.g., hard disk, NIC card, memory) across a broad range of vendor equipment.
- Execute all work according to Data Center work processes and procedures.
- Manage the goods in/out process for the storage facility, keeping full records of incoming/outgoing assets and availability lists.
- Manage asset record updates, tracking, and placement by location and status (deployed, ceased, etc.).
- Carry out daily checks to ensure security, access policies, and Data Center cleanliness are maintained.
- Control Data Center stocks (copper/fiber patch leads, patch panels, connectors, etc.) and report appropriately.
- Regularly audit Data Centers and Data Center records.
- Produce reports on quarterly activity.
Requirements
- Experience supervising a team of Data Center Engineers.
- Proactive and flexible with the ability to work as part of a team or individually.
- Effective written and verbal communication at all levels.
- Experience with hardware manufacturer installation standards and knowledge of copper and fiber cabling installations and standards. Preference given to the following qualifications:
- Certified Data Center Technician (CDCTP)
- HP Accredited Platform Specialist
- Systimax Installation & Maintenance ND3361
- Corning NPI Membership
- 5 years’ experience working in Data Center environments.
- Basic network knowledge and good experience with a broad range of IT hardware: HP, Dell, Nokia, Ciena, Cisco, Juniper, and Arista.
- Understanding of IP networks.
- Experience working in an ITIL-controlled environment with knowledge of Change Control, Incident Management, and Problem Management processes.
- Good experience using Microsoft Office and CRM databases.
- Ability to prioritize effectively.
- Ability to manage third-party contract staff/companies working within the Data Center.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Desire to learn and progress within the organization.
- Excellent time management skills.
