Job Title: Senior Instrumentation & Controls Nuclear Engineer Remote- 1 site visit per month Job Description This Senior Instrumentation & Controls Engineer role supports engineering, design, and modernization initiatives for nuclear power generation facilities. The position focuses on process instrumentation that measures temperature, pressure, flow, and level, and on the control systems that use these signals for plant indication, alarms, and control. You will develop and review engineering design packages, evaluate vendor solutions, prepare and review electrical and instrumentation drawings, and support field implementation activities. The role includes performing technical evaluations, supporting digital upgrade projects, ensuring compliance with nuclear regulatory requirements, and verifying that new system designs meet operational and regulatory expectations. You will work closely with clients, project teams, vendors, and fellow engineers to execute plant modifications and modernization projects while providing technical leadership and mentoring to junior and mid-level engineering staff. Responsibilities Lead engineering change and plant modification efforts from initial concept through implementation, testing, and closeout.Execute work in accordance with the nuclear industry's standard design and engineering change processes.Develop and review engineering evaluations, analyses, and calculations for instrumentation and control systems.Review and refine instrumentation and control system designs, including process instrumentation and control system architectures.Prepare, review, and validate engineering design documentation, including drawings, specifications, and technical reports.Coordinate engineering activities with project stakeholders, including project management, design teams, field services, vendors, and client representatives.Review vendor proposals and technical submittals to ensure compliance with project requirements, industry standards, and regulatory expectations.Provide technical oversight, including design change review, vendor oversight, field testing, and validation of new or modified systems.Support plant implementation and outage activities as needed, including on-site engineering support during installation, testing, and commissioning.Ensure that all designs and modifications comply with Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requirements and applicable nuclear industry standards.Support and lead digital upgrade projects, including replacement of analog systems with digital control and monitoring technologies.Function as a Responsible Engineer (RE) by coordinating engineering activities, assigning tasks, reviewing technical work products, and ensuring quality and completeness of deliverables.Oversee the review of drawings, calculations, and evaluations to ensure successful execution of plant modifications.Mentor junior and mid-level engineers by providing technical guidance, design reviews, and feedback on engineering work products.Drive engineering modifications independently, from initial scope development through detailed design, review, implementation, and closeout.Participate in and support protective relay modification projects, turbine control projects, feedwater system modifications, neutron flux monitoring upgrades, and other plant modification initiatives.Engage in direct client interaction to clarify requirements, present technical solutions, and support decision-making for modernization and digital transformation projects.Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes, documentation standards, and best practices within the project team. Essential Skills Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution.At least 10 years of experience in Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) Engineering.Minimum of 5 years of experience supporting operating nuclear power plants, with familiarity in the nuclear industry's standard design and engineering change process.Significant experience supporting instrumentation and control system design, modification, or modernization projects within commercial nuclear power plants.Experience supporting digital modernization and analog-to-digital upgrade projects in nuclear facilities.Strong understanding of process instrumentation used to measure and monitor temperature, pressure, flow, and tank levels.Solid knowledge of control system architectures, including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and Distributed Control Systems (DCS).Familiarity with DCS platforms such as Ovation or similar control system platforms.Strong understanding of nuclear regulatory requirements, including application of NRC regulations to instrumentation and control systems.Demonstrated ability to prepare, review, and validate engineering design documentation, including drawings, calculations, and technical evaluations.Experience with engineering change processes and plant modification workflows in nuclear power plants.Ability to perform technical evaluations and assessments of vendor solutions and technical submittals.Capability to independently drive engineering modifications from conception through design, implementation, testing, and closure.Effective communication skills for collaborating with clients, project teams, vendors, and multidisciplinary engineering staff. Additional Skills & Qualifications Professional Engineer (PE) license or active progress toward obtaining licensure.Experience with major nuclear plant modification projects, including complex system upgrades and replacements.Prior experience serving as a Responsible Engineer (RE) with accountability for coordination, task assignment, and technical oversight.Background in technical leadership, including mentoring junior and mid-level engineers and providing formal design reviews.Hands-on experience with digital upgrade projects, including replacement of analog control and monitoring systems.Experience with protective relay modification projects within power generation environments.Experience with turbine control systems, including design, modification, or modernization of turbine control architectures.Experience with feedwater systems, including control strategies and instrumentation for feedwater regulation.Experience with neutron flux monitoring systems and related instrumentation within nuclear power plants.Strong aptitude for system design, engineering calculations, design changes, vendor review, technical oversight, and field testing and validation.Comfort working in a collaborative, cross-functional environment that includes project management, design, field services, vendors, and client stakeholders.Interest in supporting critical modernization and digital transformation initiatives within the nuclear power industry. Work Environment The role offers a combination of design, technical review, client interface, and implementation support activities. Remote work flexibility is available and may increase with demonstrated nuclear industry experience. Candidates with significant nuclear experience may be considered for greater remote flexibility. Travel is typically required approximately one week per month to maintain nuclear plant badge access, with additional travel possible during plant outages or implementation activities. Work involves close collaboration with project management, design teams, field services, vendors, and client stakeholders in a highly regulated nuclear power environment. All candidates must be capable of obtaining and maintaining nuclear plant access credentials, which include Background investigation, drug screening, export control review, psychological evaluation, and nuclear site badging. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Charlotte, NC. Pay And Benefits The pay range for this position is $65.00 - $90.00/hr.
