About the Role

This position involves developing, implementing, and monitoring Health and Safety programs and policies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local health and safety regulations, and to ensure a safe and sustainable workplace. The role serves as the Subject Matter Expert for all Safety programs, including but not limited to: Hazardous Energy Control, Confined/Enclosed Spaces, Fall Protection, Slip/Trip & Fall Protection, Machine Guarding, Power Industrial Trucks, Walking Working Surfaces, Scaffolding, Work Platforms, Excavation/Trenching and Shoring, and Hot Work.

Responsibilities

  • Apply knowledge of applicable health and safety regulations, standards, and guidelines to NYPA’s goals.
  • Review and interpret policies, procedures, regulations, standards, and guidelines for dissemination to appropriate corporate and site personnel.
  • Provide interpretation and guidance on third-party submittals (e.g., review documents/specifications such as HASPs submitted by other departments for planned or ongoing work).
  • Visit all NYPA locations to assist in maintaining compliance.
  • Develop strategies for achieving and maintaining compliance with applicable regulations, statutes, and standards.
  • Develop and implement health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Conduct risk assessments and coordinate with state agency and insurer inspections.
  • Manage the Occupational Health and Safety Program.
  • Investigate accidents and incidents.
  • Provide training and guidance on health and safety issues.
  • Monitor compliance with health and safety legislation.
  • Promote health and safety in the workplace.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 7 or more years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Maintain certifications and proficiencies necessary for the role.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration), DOSH (Department of Occupational Safety & Health), and NFPA (National Fire Protection Association).
  • Certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or ASP (Associate Safety Professional) preferred.

Skills

  • Thorough understanding of OSHA/PESH Injury & Illness Recordkeeping and Reporting requirements.
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, workplace hazards (utility-specific hazards) as related to employee health and safety.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects/efforts concurrently.
  • Capability to develop and present business cases for program initiatives.
  • Strong planning skills and ability to develop and implement work plans that meet corporate and site goals.

Physical Requirements

  • Up to 40% travel, primarily within NY State.
  • Physical ability to routinely access Authority facilities, including confined spaces and areas with limited access.
  • Ability to work from heights, travel distances, and navigate stairs by foot.
  • Ability to stand for long periods in all types of weather; exposure to heat, cold, noise, wind, and general nuisance air conditions.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to move safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaces.
  • Ability to see and respond to dangerous situations.
  • Ability to wear personal protective gear and respirators.

Pay

The estimated salary range for this position is $130,000–$178,200. The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
