Duties
- Supports the CDPH mission and strategic plan by planning, organizing, coordinating, and directing a statewide licensing program for the safe use of radioactive materials.
- Serves as the first-line supervisor for a team of Health Physicists (HPs) responsible for the licensing, inspection, and regulatory oversight of radioactive materials.
- Provides technical leadership and direction in applying advanced health physics principles and regulatory standards to protect workers, the public, and the environment.
- Assigns and monitors work, reviews and approves licensing actions based on technical evaluations and staff recommendations, and ensures alignment with departmental policies and regulations.
- Conducts performance evaluations, mentors staff, supports professional development, and leads initiatives to enhance program efficiency and regulatory effectiveness.
- Acts as a liaison with internal and external stakeholders, contributes to strategic planning efforts, and ensures unit preparedness for audits and reviews by external parties.
Qualifications
- Master's degree in Health Physics, Radiation Biology, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
- At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in health physics, radiation safety, or a related field.
- Experience in managing and supervising a team of professionals.
- Knowledge of federal and state regulations governing the use of radioactive materials.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Skills
- Strong knowledge of health physics principles and regulatory standards.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of individuals.
- Ability to perform complex calculations and data analysis.
