Senior Health Physicist

About the Role

Tetra Tech is seeking a full-time, senior Health Physicist for our Albuquerque, NM office. This position supports the Response, Assessment, and Evaluation Services (RAES) program and involves performing Multi-Agency Radiation Survey and Site Investigation Manual (MARSSIM) Final Status Survey sampling design and implementation, as well as CERCLA preliminary site assessments (PA), site inspections (SI), removal site evaluations (RSE), and expanded site inspections (ESI) on sites with radionuclide and non-radioactive hazardous substances.

The selected candidate will operate and/or oversee field teams, be familiar with field equipment including radiation instrumentation, and recommend adaptations and modifications of scientific or engineering methods using independent judgment.

Responsibilities

• Lead and implement complex radiological monitoring techniques and site characterization studies.
• Direct and implement MARSSIM guidance.
• Perform fieldwork, including operating radiation instrumentation and overseeing field teams.
• Conduct site assessments and evaluations for sites with hazardous substances.
• Recommend scientific or engineering adaptations and modifications.

Requirements

• MS degree in Health Physics or current certification from the American Board of Health Physicists (ABHP).
• 12+ years of experience in Health Physics or related field.
• Certified Health Physics Certification.
• Experience with MARSSIM.
• 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER training.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Proficiency with computer software including word processing, Minitab, ProUCL, spreadsheet, and database programs.

Preferred Qualifications

• 12+ years of practical scientific or environmental engineering experience.
• Experience with radiation exposure limits, safe work methods, and decontamination.
• Experience with abandoned uranium mine sites.
• Familiarity with naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) or technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive materials (TENORM).
• Experience with environmental remediation, mining and mine reclamation, uranium mining and mills, and interaction with regulatory agencies or tribal lands.
• Experience with construction or construction oversight.
• Experience working with Principal Threat Waste (PTW).
• Comfortable assigning work to staff and mentoring junior health physicists.

Work Environment

• Primarily desk work with occasional (15%) travel and fieldwork in Arizona and New Mexico.
• Fieldwork may involve outdoor conditions in remote, isolated areas.
• Physical capacity for working outdoors in all weather conditions, walking on uneven terrain, and carrying field equipment (35 to 40 pounds).
• Ability to wear personal protective gear as needed.
• Must maintain a valid driver’s license and pass a motor vehicle record background check.

Schedule

• Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
• Periodic travel for fieldwork with overnight accommodations, which may include nights and weekends.

Work location: Albuquerque, NM. A hybrid option is available. Travel requirements: 15%.
