Work Arrangement

This role is categorized as hybrid. The successful candidate is expected to report to Sunnyvale, CA or Warren, MI three times per week (Tues., Wed., & Thurs.), at minimum.

About the Team

General Motors is at the forefront of the transformation of automotive with the electrification of our portfolio and the development of leading-edge central compute and autonomous capabilities. Our ECU Electrical team is a dynamic, high-energy, and innovative group focused on developing electrical design of next-generation ECUs (Electronic Control Units). The team also reviews and approves production ECU design changes.

About the Role

In-vehicle electronics is a fast-growing technology in the global automotive industry featuring cutting-edge technologies such as Compute, body controllers, multi-view cameras, Gig+Ethernet, PCIe, and digital/analog interfaces. We are looking for creative and enthusiastic candidates to join a fast-moving team leading the future direction of the automotive industry. The ECU hardware design team’s mission is to ensure our products meet the growing needs of our customers while delivering robust, well-designed hardware that complies with GM specifications and testing requirements from early hardware through production.

Responsibilities

  • Lead product development and integration activities for vehicle programs.
  • Utilize engineering tools and processes to develop components and systems for vehicle programs, ensuring achievement of program milestones through effective program management.
  • Coach and lead suppliers to execute program work on time and with excellence.
  • Develop PCB layout designs for existing and new architecture-based ECUs, collaborating with PCBA and ECAD engineers.
  • Run simulations, create PCB layouts, and participate in design direction meetings.
  • Foster a collaborative environment with internal and external team members.
  • Design the physical layout of integrated circuits (ICs) or printed circuit boards (PCBs), including placing and routing components, traces, and other elements to ensure proper functionality and performance.
  • Conduct design rule checks (DRC) and design for manufacturability (DFM) checks to verify layout designs meet required specifications, constraints, and manufacturing capabilities.
  • Collaborate with circuit designers, system engineers, and packaging engineers to optimize layout design for performance, power, area, and manufacturability.
  • Select appropriate technology and processes for layout design based on project requirements, such as target application, performance goals, and manufacturing capabilities.
  • Optimize layout design for signal integrity (SI), power integrity (PI), electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), thermal, and mechanical factors by working with subject matter experts.
  • Support high-density, high-speed communication, and RF layout.
  • Support ECAD librarians by ensuring development of ECAD library parts meets PCBA Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and GM resiliency requirements.
  • Collaborate with component engineers, procurement, and supply chain teams to select appropriate components for PCBA design.
  • Apply Design for Assembly (DFA) principles to optimize PCBA design for efficient assembly processes.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements, cost reduction, and quality enhancement in PCBA manufacturing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
  • Professional experience creating digital/analog hardware interfaces, including schematic creation and/or PCB layout, simulation, and supportive documentation.
  • Minimum 5 years of working experience in PCB layout design.
  • Experience in design and analysis tools like Mentor Graphics (schematic and layout).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous industry experience with infotainment, telematics, or connectivity.
  • 10 years or more of experience in PCB layout design.
  • Knowledgeable in high-speed communication buses (Ethernet, PCIe, SerDes…).

Pay

The expected base compensation for this role is $106,600 - $185,000. Actual base compensation within the identified range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
