Senior Freight Coordinator / Freight Specialist
About the role
Our client is a manufacturer of safety products with large government contracts. They are not a large corporation. They are a hands-on manufacturer where institutional knowledge runs deep, leadership is accessible, and the work you do is visible. We are hiring a Freight Specialist to own the day-to-day movement of freight in and out of the Safety Division - inbound and outbound shipments, carrier scheduling, and the documentation that keeps every order accurate and on time. You will work in a small, close-knit office directly adjacent to the manufacturing warehouse, and you will be the person the warehouse team and carriers rely on to keep freight moving without friction. This is a role for someone who has done this work for years, knows how to run it independently, and doesn't need to be managed closely to get it right.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate daily inbound and outbound freight shipments (LTL/FTL, parcel as needed) for manufacturing operations
- Schedule pickups and deliveries; communicate shipment requirements with carriers, warehouse staff, and internal stakeholders
- Route shipments accurately based on service level, cost, transit time, and delivery requirements
- Monitor shipment progress and resolve issues - delays, exceptions, shortages, incorrect paperwork - quickly and professionally
- Prepare and verify shipping documentation: bills of lading, packing slips, shipment confirmations, and carrier labels
- Maintain accurate shipment records and keep status current in company systems
- Coordinate with warehouse staff to ensure orders are staged, labeled, and ready for carrier pickup
- Work with carriers and freight forwarders to obtain quotes, compare options, and resolve billing discrepancies
- Identify bottlenecks in the freight process and recommend practical improvements that reduce delays and errors
Requirements
- 5+ years coordinating freight and shipments in a warehouse, logistics, or manufacturing setting
- Strong working knowledge of LTL/FTL transportation methods, as well as Air, Rail and Ocean shipping and common shipping workflows
- Demonstrated ability to work independently in a small office with minimal supervision
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel, and comfort managing shipment data in tracking or ERP systems
- Strong preference for experience with SAP Business One
- Strong communication skills; able to coordinate effectively with carriers and internal teams
- Detail orientation and the ability to manage multiple shipments and priorities at once
- Preferred: experience in a manufacturing environment with SKU/order variety and tight fulfillment windows; familiarity with ERP or TMS tools; experience resolving carrier billing discrepancies.
Benefits
- Comprehensive benefits: health, dental, vision, 401(k)
- 100% on-site at our New Rochelle, NY headquarters
- A stable, 50+ year-old manufacturer with ISO 9001:2015 certification and a strong regional reputation
Pay
$70-80k annually, commensurate with experience
