Senior FMS Systems Engineer
About the role
Working within the navigation systems design group, you will be responsible for conducting and/or directing systems engineering activities related to the design and development of Flight Management Systems. The systems engineer will participate in all aspects concerning the design and development of avionics functions and aircraft modernization projects. The engineer is expected to become very familiar with existing CMC product functions, hardware, algorithms, system architecture, industry standards, industry and customer needs, and contribute to product success.
Responsibilities
- Review and evaluate customer requests and develop technical responses and derive a solution that meets customer requirements.
- Interface with other system designers (team members and contractors) and customer representatives to assess the impact of proposed concepts and recommend solutions to meet cost, schedule and performance requirements.
- Understand the problems related to the design of avionic systems, ensure the synthesis and design a functional system.
- Follow up with hardware and software development teams.
- Ensure the validation and verification of the principles and then translate the functional design into solutions for hardware and software development.
- Contribute to all phases of the system development life cycle (requirements analysis and monitoring, design, development, testing and deployment).
- Produce or review system level specifications.
- Produce or review technical manuals.
- Plan, set-up and participate in avionics systems verification testing: e.g., Flight Management System integration with other avionics systems (i.e. IRS, GPS, Autopilot, EFIS, Navigation radios, Datalink & Communications Systems, Surveillance Systems, etc.).
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives for processes and products.
- Learn various industry standards and incorporate them into product design.
- As Subject Matter Expert support CMC Airworthiness team in communications with Transport Canada for product CAN-TSO Design Approval.
- May be required to travel occasionally.
Requirements
- Bachelor or Master degree in electrical, aerospace, or computer engineering.
- Minimum 7+ years of relevant experience in the development, validation and/or verification of commercial/military avionics systems (FMS, Sensors, Displays, Autopilot, MCDU, ...).
- Experience developing real-time embedded systems, including hardware/software integration.
- Experience in the use of flight simulators, emulators, logic analyzers, and test equipment.
- Knowledge of civil/military avionics standards and practices: DO-178 (or equivalent), MIL-STD-1553 and ARINC 429.
- Knowledge of the main functions of an FMS (ARINC 702A standard), RNP and FANS Datalink concepts.
- Knowledge of relevant regulations (FAA AC20-138, FAA TSO-C115, RTCA DO-236/283, EASA CS-ACNS).
Preferred qualifications
- Familiar with C and C++ development languages.
- Experience in displays, guidance systems, navigation systems, aircraft simulation systems or other related avionics systems.
