Senior F5 Administrator
About the role
The Senior F5 Administrator is responsible for the design, implementation, and operational management of enterprise F5 BIG-IP application delivery and traffic management platforms across on-premises and cloud environments. This role serves as a Level-3 escalation point and provides architectural leadership for load balancing, application availability, SSL/TLS services, and resiliency designs supporting business-critical applications.
Responsibilities
- Operate and support enterprise F5 BIG-IP platforms (physical, virtual, and cloud), ensuring high availability and performance for business-critical applications.
- Provide Level-3 operational support for incidents, outages, and complex performance issues, serving as an escalation point for F5-related services.
- Configure and maintain application traffic services, including VIPs, pools, health monitors, persistence, profiles, and iRules.
- Manage platform lifecycle activities, including software upgrades, hotfixes, and routine maintenance across environments.
- Implement and support SSL/TLS services, including certificate deployment, renewal, and synchronization in high-availability configurations.
- Partner with application, network, and security teams to onboard new services and resolve operational issues in production environments.
- Support hybrid and cloud-based deployments, including F5 services in AWS and/or Azure and integration with upstream security controls.
- Maintain operational documentation, including runbooks, standards, and configuration records to support audits and service continuity.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of hands-on experience administering F5 BIG-IP platforms
- Strong expertise with:
- BIG-IP LTM
- VIPs, pools, monitors, persistence, profiles
- iRules (development and troubleshooting)
- Strong understanding of:
- TCP/IP, HTTP/S, DNS
- Load-balancing algorithms and application behavior
- Proven experience in enterprise production environments
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with F5 in cloud environments (AWS and/or Azure)
- Familiarity with application resiliency and blue/green deployment patterns
- Experience integrating F5 with security platforms (WAF, firewalls, segmentation)
- Scripting or automation experience (Ansible, Python, Bash, REST APIs)
- F5 certifications (e.g., F5-CA, F5-CTS)
Working Conditions
This is a hybrid position requiring three days in office per week in one of our core locations (Cedar Rapids, IA/ Denver, CO/ Philadelphia, PA). Non-traditional work hours as needed. Participate in scheduled on-call rotations and provide after-hours support as required to maintain the security and availability of critical network services.
