About the role

We are seeking an Estimator with a minimum of 5 years of estimating experience and 2 years of field experience in Heavy Civil Construction, specifically with roadways and bridges. The ideal candidate is knowledgeable in contract delivery methods (design-build, design-bid-build, Lump Sum) and has experience with DOT/turnpike, cities/counties, and airport authority contracts. This role requires a self-motivated individual who collaborates with peers, mentors young engineers, and proactively identifies problems and solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Understand bid items, basis of estimate, and identify errors, discrepancies, and solutions in plans and specifications.
  • Read and interpret plans, specifications, RFPs, RFIs, addendums, technical special provisions, and other project documents.
  • Build green sheet estimates, breakdown activity structures, construction schedules, and risk matrix analyses.
  • Create job budgets for awarded contracts.
  • Develop bid strategies, cost-saving initiatives, and apply management skills.
  • Perform accurate and timely quantity takeoffs.
  • Estimate entire jobs independently.
  • Study and review estimating reports, including equipment/labor hours, key indicators, and equipment balance analysis.
  • Stay updated on DOT Standards and Specifications.
  • Review bid submittal packages and lead estimating discussions with company executives.
  • Obtain clarifications on plans and specifications from owners or engineers of record.
  • Coordinate and invite suppliers and subcontractors to quote different scopes of work.
  • Analyze supplier and subcontractor pricing inputs.
  • Build and strengthen subcontractor and supplier relationships.
  • Perform unit cost analysis.
  • Assist with pre-bid meetings and bid submittals.
  • Monitor commodity trade prices and construction technologies/techniques.
  • Maintain continuing education in construction through conventions, forums, and other events.
  • Communicate with field personnel (e.g., project engineers, superintendents, foremen, fleet managers) to track and adjust unit costs as needed.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Heavy Civil Construction estimating.
  • Minimum 2 years of field experience in Heavy Civil Construction, specifically with roadways and bridges.
  • B.S. in Engineering or Construction Management.
  • Knowledge of contract delivery methods: design-build, design-bid-build, Lump Sum.
  • Experience with contracts involving DOT/turnpike, cities/counties, and airport authorities.
