Senior Estimator (Heavy Civil Construction)

General Summary

This position is responsible for developing accurate and timely proposals and estimates for both private and public sector works projects from $50 to $100 million to ensure Granite is a responsive bidder. Projects include structures, sound barriers and bridges, as well as underground work such as waterlines, sewer lines, storm drains, and dry utilities.

About the Role

The role supports a region that covers the Inland Empire, High Desert, and Coachella Valley specializing in highways, roads, rail, infrastructure, utilities, and small buildings.

Essential Job Accountabilities

• Create and promote a safety program that meets or exceeds Granite’s Annual Incident Goal and fosters a culture of safety at all levels.
• Administer and promote environmental policies and practices to minimize adverse environmental impacts.
• Create and maintain a quality culture that ensures high-quality and timely estimates.
• Analyze and compile estimate data, including labor, materials, equipment, and other factors.
• Review drawings, specifications, and project site conditions to ensure accuracy and completeness.
• Develop and review alternative solutions and construction methods to enhance competitiveness.
• Utilize cost history to verify the accuracy of estimates.
• Present estimates and participate in bid reviews with senior management.
• Communicate estimate information to field operations and ensure understanding of the scope of the job.
• Supervise, direct, and mentor estimating staff to meet Granite standards.
• Lead design-build preconstruction services to ensure high-quality, competitive estimates and schedules.
• Participate in means and methods discussions to drive innovative ideas.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Business Administration, or equivalent related work experience.
• 10+ years estimating experience including heavy civil structures, sound barriers and bridges, and underground work.
• Prior management experience required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Proficiency with MS Office products, AGTEK Take-off, and Primavera P6 or similar scheduling software.
• Advanced knowledge of HCSS HeavyBid estimating software.
• Advanced knowledge of civil engineering and construction principles and equipment capabilities.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Advanced knowledge of agency DBE requirements.

Physical Demands

• Regularly talk and hear.
• Frequently stand, walk, sit, and use hands to operate a computer keyboard.

• Ability and willingness to abide by Granite’s Code of Conduct.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to drive.
• Travel to other regions for IP/JV bidding opportunities, including air travel and overnight stays.
