About the Role

As a Senior Estimator at Schuff Steel, you will take the lead on producing accurate, detail-oriented estimates on complex projects through collaborative efforts with various Schuff Steel disciplines such as fabrication, purchasing, field erection, pre-construction, sub-fabrication, and third-party vendors. Our Estimators provide the business with estimates that can be accurately interpreted and executed by our Pre-Construction team.

Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze blueprints, specifications, and other documentation presented by the client to prepare accurate project estimates.
  • Collaborate with teams on fabrication and erection strategies for projects.
  • Prepare detailed and accurate estimates for new projects and change orders on existing contracts, meeting assigned deadlines.
  • Perform takeoffs of steel materials, estimate shop labor, field erection, materials, buyout items, and equipment costs (including crane costs) to prepare thorough bid estimates.
  • Enter estimates, takeoffs, and drawing numbers into the in-house computer program.
  • Read and interpret job bid instructions and detailed specifications to prepare material takeoffs and labor estimates.
  • Work directly with Sales and Pre-Construction Teams to understand project size, scope, timelines, and deadlines.
  • Adhere to Schuff estimating guidelines and procedures.
  • Discuss alternative recommendations for projects where management requires alternative estimates to meet client needs.
  • Interact professionally with key team members.
  • Prepare pricing estimates for new projects and change orders, summarizing results with appropriate leaders to ensure all aspects of the job are covered.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and at least 10 years of related experience estimating and bidding on structural steel and heavy plate projects.
  • BS Degree from an accredited college or university in Construction Management, Civil/Structural Engineering, or Business may substitute for 3 years of the required experience.
  • 7–10 years of progressively responsible experience estimating structural steel construction projects.
  • Proven experience as a construction or steel estimator.
  • Must have proven experience providing companies with accurate information that aids operations in achieving corporate goals.

Skills

  • Thorough knowledge and advanced understanding of construction terminology and estimating software packages.
  • Basic understanding of job cost accounting and project management concepts.
  • Strong analytical skills and comfort with numbers.
  • Great attention to detail and excellent written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word.
  • Extensive knowledge of computer software, Windows 7, and Microsoft Office 2010.

Work Environment
