SENIOR ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST (SUPERVISORY)

About the role

Under the general direction of the Office Chief, the incumbent is responsible for the leadership of a multi-disciplinary team of environmental professionals. This position includes hiring, staff development, and performance reviews. As the Branch Chief, the incumbent ensures the accuracy and quality of a broad range of technical documents prepared in their branch.

The incumbent coordinates management-level interactions with local and regional agencies, federal and state resource agencies, elected officials, project stakeholders, and the general public on matters pertaining to project development and compliance with environmental laws, regulations, and policies. The role involves supervising staff, providing feedback, guidance, counseling, and training to team members.

This position may be eligible for hybrid telework at the discretion of the Department, based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. In-person attendance may be required for operational needs, and employees must be able to report to their worksite with minimal notice if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location in Alameda County as needed. Business travel may be required, with reimbursement subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit provisions. Commute expenses to the headquartered location are the responsibility of the selected candidate.

Responsibilities

• Lead a multi-disciplinary team of environmental professionals, including hiring, staff development, and performance reviews.
• Ensure the accuracy and quality of technical documents prepared by the branch.
• Coordinate with local, regional, and federal agencies, elected officials, stakeholders, and the public on project development and environmental compliance.
• Supervise staff, providing feedback, guidance, counseling, and training.
• Report to the headquartered location in Alameda County as needed for operational requirements.
• Travel for business as required, with reimbursement subject to applicable regulations.

Requirements

• Individuals who are currently in the classification, eligible for lateral transfer, reinstatement, list or LEAP eligibility, or in the process of obtaining list eligibility.
• SROA and/or Surplus candidates are given priority; others may be considered if no priority candidates apply.
• Eligibility for a Training and Development assignment may also be considered.
• Applicants must meet the Minimum Qualifications stated in the Classification Specification.

Pay

$10,854.00 - $13,493.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Schedule

Permanent, full-time position. Hybrid telework may be available at the discretion of the Department.
