Senior Environmental Health Risk Assessor

About the role

The Senior Environmental Health Risk Assessor works within the Vermont Department of Health's Division of Environmental Health's Toxicology Group. The position is the State's scientific expert on human health risk from chemical exposures, working with the State Toxicologist and technical staff to develop health-based risk levels for chemicals in air, water, soil and food. Responsibilities include providing guidance to the public and partner organizations on appropriate limits for environmental chemical exposures, determining acceptable risk levels for volatile chemicals in indoor air, providing or critically reviewing human health risk assessments for contaminated sites, advising on health-based levels for PFAS and other contaminants in drinking water, responding to chemical emergencies, reviewing applications for pesticide use, and developing advisories for fish consumption. This is a hybrid position with the office located in Waterbury, Vermont.

Responsibilities

• Providing guidance to the public and partner organizations on appropriate limits for environmental chemical exposures
• Determining acceptable risk levels for volatile chemicals in indoor air
• Providing or critically reviewing human health risk assessments for contaminated sites
• Advising on health-based levels for PFAS and other contaminants in drinking water
• Responding to chemical emergencies
• Reviewing applications for pesticide use
• Developing advisories for fish consumption

Minimum Qualifications

• Education: Master's Degree in a biological, environmental or chemical science.
• Experience: Five years at a professional level, including at least three in chemical human health risk assessment.
