Senior Engineering Manager API Platform

Responsibilities
- Design and operate backend APIs at scale, especially GraphQL-based platforms
- Understand and implement authentication and authorization patterns, including OAuth, OIDC, JWTs, and service-to-service security
- Drive technical solutions to achieve business outcomes
- Set OKRs with your team and ensure the health of those with KPIs
- Build a strategy and roadmap with cross-functional partners
- Collaborate with other teams across CVS Digital to ensure the API platform meets the needs of engineers
- Stay updated on new technologies that improve performance, delivery, and the developer experience
- Hire and retain high-performing, deeply technical engineers who care about building a great engineering culture
- Lead a team of front-end and backend engineers to build APIs for CVS Health engineers
- Participate in the design and architecture process for new capabilities across teams
- Be a servant leader, rallying your team around a shared vision and knowing what they need to be successful
- Provide technical leadership, direction, clarity, and vision
- Advocate for engineering best practices, including test coverage, clean code, security, and accessibility
- Data-driven and articulate the value our platform provides to engineering teams and CVS
- Coach and mentor team members and contribute to building a strong engineering culture
- Care about the mental health and well-being of the engineers on your team
Requirements
- Proven experience designing and operating backend APIs at scale, especially GraphQL-based platforms
- Strong understanding of authentication and authorization patterns, including OAuth, OIDC, JWTs, and service-to-service security
- Experience with API gateway technologies such as Kong, Apigee, or Azure API Management
- Experience with distributed workflows, asynchronous orchestration, or job-processing systems such as Temporal or similar platforms
- Experience with Node.js, TypeScript, and modern Node.js backend development
- Experience with testing and proficiency with a testing framework (e.g., Jest, RTL, Cypress, Playwright)
- Experience with CI/CD practices
Qualifications
- 7+ years of leadership experience, directly managing individual contributors
- 7+ years of experience building enterprise grade applications at scale
- 5+ years of experience with JavaScript
- 3+ years of experience with TypeScript and modern Node.js backend development
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience (Highschool diploma plus 4 years relevant work experience)
Pay
The Typical Pay Range For This Role Is $118,450.00 - $260,590.00 This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors. This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above. This position also includes an award target in the company’s equity award program.
