About the role

This role is the top progression level position in the Engineer series, including senior to technical expert engineers. It involves highly difficult and complex work requiring extensive knowledge and significant experience within the functional assignment area. The position plans and conducts complex work with independent judgment in the evaluation, selection, adaptation, and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria. It devises innovative approaches to previously undefined problems and develops industry-wide engineering criteria to ensure compliance with design standards. The role applies advanced engineering knowledge and skills to provide technical expertise and guidance to all levels of engineers and/or team leadership, solving complex engineering problems or coordinating medium to large-scale engineering projects. The position serves as a resource to management on complex engineering issues and performs research to find innovative and cost-effective solutions. It also acts as a technical expert on engineering-related legal and regulatory issues for outside entities. The level of the position will be based on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and conduct complex engineering work requiring independent judgment.
  • Evaluate, select, adapt, and modify standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Devise innovative approaches to previously undefined problems.
  • Develop innovative and original industry-wide engineering criteria ensuring compliance with design standards.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to engineers and management.
  • Solve complex engineering problems or plan and coordinate medium to large-scale engineering projects.
  • Serve as a resource to management on complex engineering problems and issues.
  • Perform research to find innovative and cost-effective engineering solutions to operational problems.
  • Act as a technical expert on engineering-related legal and regulatory issues for outside entities.

Requirements

  • Senior: 5+ years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Staff: 8+ years of relevant engineering experience. (An Engineering PhD can substitute for up to 5 years of experience based on research engineering work on related projects approved by executive leadership.)
  • Extensive knowledge of engineering theories, principles, and practices applicable to a broad variety of assignments and related fields.
  • Extensive skill in the use of advanced techniques and the modification and extension of theories, precepts, and practices of the field and related sciences and disciplines.
  • Full knowledge of business/financial and contractual matters.
  • Recognized as an expert by other engineers and management in the assigned area.
  • Provides expert technical advice to other engineers and management in the assigned area.
  • Skilled in the use of advanced engineering techniques.
  • Strong planning and project management skills.
  • Strong technical and organizational leadership skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including technical writing.
  • In-depth knowledge of various computer applications, with the ability to manipulate personal computer applications and perform engineering calculations using applicable software programs (e.g., Matlab, Excel, etc.).
  • Proven decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to think analytically and solve complex problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply codes, regulations, and practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks.
  • Equally effective working independently or in a team environment.
  • At least one year of Nuclear power experience is preferred.

Education Requirements

  • Required Degree (equivalency not accepted in lieu of required degree): Bachelor's in Engineering from an ABET-accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET.
  • Alternative qualifications:
    • Bachelor's in Engineering from an institution outside the U.S. accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved.
    • Bachelor's in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math, or Engineering Technology, plus a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET.
    • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.

Licenses, Certifications, or Qualifications

Dominion Energy minimum experience and education requirements may exceed stated ANSI standards, and candidates must meet Dominion Energy's minimum requirements. For Nuclear Employees, ANSI Standard ANSI/ANS-3.1-2014, Section 4.6.1 must be met, all of which is met or exceeded in the Engineer Series job summaries with the exception of the Nuclear Power Experience requirement of at least 1 year.
