Senior Engineer - Shopper Backend

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Shopper Backend team, your day involves collaborating with a cross-disciplinary squad to design, build, and deploy high-performance, multi-region services using tools like Go, Copilot Postgres, Redis, and Kafka. You will take deep ownership of our production environment, driving architectural decisions, performing non-functional requirements, and analyzing metrics to ship real-world products that directly empower shoppers nationwide.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and deploy high-performance, multi-region services.
  • Drive architectural decisions and analyze metrics to improve production systems.
  • Lead complex technical challenges autonomously while mentoring peers.
  • Share solutions across the organization and shape engineering culture.
  • Own production environment with on-call responsibilities (rotation every 3-4 weeks).
  • Drive non-functional requirements for performance, load testing, and scaling infrastructure.
  • Design and optimize distributed data models using Postgres, Snowflake, and Redis.
  • Build and maintain RESTful APIs for high-volume customer traffic.
  • Mentor junior or peer engineers, lead design sessions, and provide code reviews.
  • Ensure observability through logging and metrics.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of software development experience, with a focus on backend REST services.
  • 4+ years of experience with relational or NoSQL databases (distributed database design preferred).
  • Experience with caching technologies such as Redis.
  • 2+ years of experience with messaging/queuing systems like Kafka.
  • Strong understanding of CS principles and design patterns (e.g., Gang of Four).
  • 2+ years driving non-functional requirements (performance/load testing, scaling infrastructure).
  • Experience with observability tools (logging, metrics).
  • On-call experience for production issue resolution.
  • Proven experience building and scaling multi-region distributed architectures or microservices.
  • Hands-on experience with Go, PostgreSQL, and event-driven messaging.

Schedule

  • Birmingham, AL: Hybrid with at least 2 days per week in-office (core days: Wednesday and Thursday).
  • Minneapolis, MN: Hybrid with at least 1 day per week in-office (Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday).
  • San Francisco, CA: Hybrid with at least 1 day per week in-office (Monday through Thursday).
  • Certain roles may require full-time in-office presence.
