About the role
This hybrid role, based in Louisville, CO, involves leading high voltage (35–500 kV) engineering for Solar, Wind, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) substations and generation tie lines. You will drive conceptual, preconstruction, and construction phase engineering, manage external consultants, perform in-house design work, and support cost estimating. The position requires 25% travel for site visits and factory inspections.
Responsibilities
- Lead engineering efforts for high voltage substations and generation tie lines during conceptual, preconstruction, and construction phases.
- Develop conceptual designs and scope of work documents for permitting, estimating, and regional renewable projects, aligning with AES and utility standards.
- Manage external engineering consultants to produce 30% design packages for substations and transmission facilities.
- Perform in-house high voltage design work, support cost estimating (including BOM reviews), and assess substation expansions.
- Conduct technical due diligence to derisk project pipelines and M&A portfolios, serving as the project engineer for all high-voltage functions.
- Review EPC substation bid packages for compliance with interconnection agreements, NERC standards, AES standards, and industry best practices.
- Provide design reviews, identify documentation inconsistencies, and highlight critical risks early in project development.
- Coordinate with interconnection providers (e.g., CAISO, HECO, Xcel, Tri State, PacifiCorp) to ensure compliant collector substations, gen tie designs, and switchyard requirements.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with real estate, permitting, commercial, legal, estimating, PV/Wind/BESS engineering, preconstruction, and construction teams.
- Maintain relationships with specialist HV consultants and contractors, demonstrating experience across DC-coupled, AC-coupled solar plus BESS, wind, and multiphase project designs.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- 6 years of experience in high voltage design or a related field, including:
- 5 years in high voltage (35–500 kV) substation design for renewable plants (Solar/Wind/BESS), from conceptual through commissioning, using AutoCAD and Bluebeam.
- 5 years in high voltage generation tie line and medium voltage collector system design, from conceptual through commissioning.
- 4 years working with utilities to obtain technical requirements, negotiate LGIAs, and coordinate drawing reviews to meet utility/ISO specifications.
- 4 years analyzing EPC bids for cost competitiveness, value engineering, and compliance with industry and owner standards.
- 3 years in high voltage greenfield, brownfield, and M&A technical due diligence and portfolio risk assessment.
- 4 years managing Engineer of Record to develop 10%, 30%, and up to 60% high voltage design packages, ensuring compliance with IEEE, NESC, NFPA, ISO, and utility-specific requirements.
- 4 years developing, designing, and de-risking deliverables, and supporting high voltage estimators with Class 4 and Class 5 estimates (e.g., General Arrangements, Single-Line Diagrams, Bill of Materials).
- 4 years developing high voltage circuit breaker and transformer specifications for owner-furnished equipment, reviewing design drawings, and supervising pre-tanking and factory acceptance testing.
- 5 years of experience with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, ETAP, OpenDSS, Google Earth, and Microsoft Suite.
