National Grid is hiring a Senior Engineer for our Control and Integration department in Syracuse, NY. We deliver safe and secure energy to homes, communities, and businesses, connecting people to the energy they need for their lives. Our expertise positions us to shape the sustainable future of the energy industry by reducing costs and pioneering flexible energy systems.

About the role

The Control & Integration (C&I) Department supports National Grid’s Substation, Transmission, and Distribution departments with capital project engineering and design. We engineer SCADA solutions and network designs to enable communication between system devices and our transmission and regional operation control centers. Our work allows control centers to view and record metering data, device status, health, and remotely control substation equipment.

The C&I team specifies equipment for substation controls, provides network diagrams and configuration spec sheets for technicians, and supplies preliminary engineering specifications and device lists for design. We conduct detailed design reviews of engineered drawings and provide network mapping and HMI configurations for digital substations. The senior engineer will also assist with software configuration, troubleshooting, and leadership development, including mentoring new engineers and interns.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the engineering, design, integration, and support of substation control, metering, instrumentation, SCADA, and communication systems for transmission and distribution projects.
  • Develop and maintain digital substation architectures, communication topologies, network configurations, and data flow mappings to ensure reliable and secure system performance.
  • Define functional requirements and integration strategies for RTUs, IEDs, meters, annunciators, relays, communication processors, and other substation automation equipment.
  • Prepare and review engineering deliverables, including point lists, equipment specifications, control philosophies, network diagrams, reports, and associated technical documentation.
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight to multidisciplinary project teams, consultants, and external engineering partners to ensure compliance with company standards and project objectives.
  • Implement QA/QC processes and perform technical reviews to ensure the accuracy, consistency, and quality of engineering deliverables.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory, cybersecurity, and industry standards, including NERC-CIP requirements.
  • Support operations and field personnel by troubleshooting control, metering, instrumentation, and communication system issues and participating in storm restoration activities as needed.
  • Develop internal organizational capability through training, mentoring, knowledge transfer, and onboarding support for engineers and external design resources.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical or Computer Engineering from an ABET-accredited engineering program, with a preference for power coursework/concentration.
  • Familiarity with common utility communication standards and protocols such as serial RS232/485, Distributed Network Protocol (DNP3), and IEC61850.
  • Proficiency with TCP/IP, UDP, and Ethernet protocols, and network engineering concepts preferred.
  • Familiarity with IEC 61850 Goose Messaging and Sampled Values is a plus.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and working knowledge of devices represented on typical utility substation schematics.
  • Knowledge of utility 3-phase AC systems and DC systems.
  • Familiarity with substation testing, commissioning, and maintenance techniques.
  • Proficient MS Office computer skills (Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Visio, etc.).
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Proven interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to provide on-site testing and commissioning support throughout the National Grid NY territory.
  • Valid driver’s license.
