About the Role
Collins Aerospace, a leader in technologically advanced and intelligent aerospace and defense solutions, is seeking a Drafting Designer to join our Mechanical Computer-Aided Design (MCAD) team within the Global Technical Services organization. In this role, you will work directly with engineering staff to produce 3D models and 2D layout drawings of complex aerospace products, ensuring they meet both engineering and customer requirements. You will also guide and mentor detailing drafters, ensuring drawing accuracy, proper usage of GD&T, and adherence to industry standards.
Responsibilities
- Work with engineering for initial 2D concept of product.
- Create 3D product models, outlines, and layouts.
- Develop solid model piece parts and housings in NX, support the transition to Model-Based Definition (MBD), and enable direct-to-manufacture processes.
- Apply tolerance stack-up analysis results to ensure correct fit, alignment, and performance of complex assemblies.
- Create assemblies in NX and manage the Bill of Materials.
- Generate dimensioned detail component drawings for high-complexity piece parts.
- Lead detailing drafters in completing component drawings for design projects.
- Check drawings for accuracy, correct GD&T, and compliance with company and industry standards (ANSI Y14.5M).
- Support interface with the Structures group to provide necessary physical product definition for stress, thermal, and dynamic analyses.
- Ensure proper filing, control, and export classification of created design data.
- Collaborate with engineering teams globally to design and develop products, interpreting and implementing both oral and written instructions.
- Maintain strict adherence to established design processes to ensure successful product realization.
Requirements
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret security clearance (active clearance required from day one).
- U.S. citizenship is mandatory.
- Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, or an Advanced Degree in a related field with at least 3 years of experience.
- Proven experience in 3D mechanical design and drafting, including development of complex assemblies.
- Strong understanding of GD&T and ANSI Y14.5M standards.
- Proficiency in drafting practices, PLM tools, and general computer applications.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a global team environment.
- Attention to detail and commitment to delivering safe, reliable products.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of mechanical and manufacturing principles, with the ability to read and interpret models, assembly drawings, and detailed part prints.
- Proficiency with Siemens NX and Teamcenter, particularly in the design of rotating machines.
- Experience with additional CAD platforms is beneficial.
- Manufacturing background or experience is highly valued.
- Familiarity with Model-Based Definition (MBD) and Additive Manufacturing technologies.

Pay
The salary range for this role is $86,800 – $165,200 USD. The range reflects a good-faith estimate for all experience levels. Factors considered include role, function, responsibilities, work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
Schedule
This is an onsite position based at our Rockford, IL facility. Travel requirements are less than 10%.
