Senior Engineer - Civil/Structural
Position Summary
The Senior Engineer for Civil/Structural Substation Engineering will be the lead civil/structural engineer for multiple, concurrent high voltage substation projects. The Senior Engineer will be responsible for providing all aspects of civil and structural engineering design and construction support for assigned projects; interfacing with clients and other outside entities on technical issues; providing technical support and guidance to other staff including designers, engineers and project managers; and assisting in developing engineering standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Position
- Oversee others in the performance of engineering calculations and studies/review results.
- Work with subcontractors, other staff engineers and designers to perform all aspects of civil and structural engineering calculations and designs for substations.
- Develop Finite Element structural models of structures and other steel design calculations such as connections and anchor rods.
- Work with designers to develop structure design and fabrication drawings.
- Develop calculations for reinforced concrete foundations, and work with designers to develop foundation design drawings.
- Work with designers to develop site-work drawings including embankment preparation, drainage, and erosion control details.
- Cooky with clients and vendors, including attendance at meetings and conferences.
- Assure that all engineering documents and records are properly maintained.
- Cooky with purchasing and quality control personnel.
- Provide engineering specifications and other information required by purchasing to procure equipment.
- Review vendor submittals.
- Cooky with contract administrative personnel to assure client requirements are met.
- Participate in development of less experienced engineers and designers.
Professional Registration
Professional Engineering license (one or more US states) is required.
Education Requirements
Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering.
Experience & Training Requirements
- 10+ Years Experience in at least two of the following areas:
- Foundation Design
- Structural Steel Design
- Transmission Level Substations (13.8kV – 500 kV)
Computer Skills
- Demonstrated experience in the following software programs:
- AutoCAD (2015 or later) – intermediate
- MathCAD – intermediate
- Microsoft Excel – intermediate
- Microsoft Outlook – basic
- Microsoft Project – basic
- Microsoft Word – intermediate
- RISA or other Structural Analysis/Design Software - advanced
Travel Requirements
Senior Engineers’ travel level is typically 10%.
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift / move equipment up to 15 lbs.

Senior Engineers must be highly motivated and able to execute tasks from a lead role. Good written and verbal communications skills are also required. Ability to work well with others in a team setting is essential. Skilled in engineering theories and principles is necessary. Skilled in researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations is required. Skilled in problem solving in time-sensitive situations is important. Skilled in AutoCAD (2015 or later), MathCAD, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Project, Microsoft Word, and RISA or other Structural Analysis/Design Software is beneficial.
