Description Duties

The New York State Department of Financial Services seeks to build an equitable, transparent, and resilient financial system that benefits individuals and supports business. Through engagement, data-driven regulation and policy, and operational excellence, the Department and its employees are responsible for empowering consumers and protecting them from financial harm; ensuring the health of the entities we regulate; driving economic growth in New York through responsible innovation; and preserving the stability of the global financial system.

Duties

  • Leads and works on investigations of potential violations of the Financial Services, Insurance, and Banking laws, and other state and federal laws; work includes requesting and reviewing productions, legal research, evaluating evidence, taking testimony, negotiating settlements with opposing counsel, and preparing for and conducting administrative hearings;
  • Investigates complaints filed with the Department by consumers and consumer groups and recommends appropriate action;
  • Proposes and develops new areas and subjects for investigation;
  • Reviews proposed legislation and regulations and the implementation of passed legislation and adopted regulations;
  • Provides legal advice on matters regarding regulatory actions and develops legal approaches to accomplish various departmental objectives;
  • Counsels and advises management on compliance with applicable laws and regulations;
  • Conducts special studies and research about issues and programs of interest to the Division and prepares reports and recommendations as assigned;
  • And other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications: Admission to the New York State bar in good standing; At least 4 years of post-bar legal experience in the finance or banking industry;

Appointment Method

This is an appointment to a position in the exempt jurisdictional class. As such, the incumbent of this position would serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority.

Please note that a change in negotiating unit may affect your salary, insurance and other benefits.

Salary: $115,283 - $145,682 (salary commensurate with experience)

Positions located within the New York City metropolitan area, as well as Suffolk, Nassau, Rockland, and Westchester Counties, are also eligible to receive an additional $4,000 annual downstate adjustment.

Appointment Status: This is an appointment to a position in the exempt jurisdictional class. Appointment to this position is pending Governor Appointment’s Office and Division of Budget approval.
