Senior Energy Storage Engineer - Power (Multiple Locations)

This opportunity is ideal for a well-rounded, driven senior-level Electrical Engineer with a focus on Energy Storage. The role requires an individual who enjoys engineering, business development, and project management—a "seller-doer" with high-quality technical and interpersonal skills. The Energy Storage team focuses on renewable power generation and storage in both the utility-scale and commercial/industrial markets, offering a wide range of design and project execution experiences. Services include initial battery sizing, use-case evaluation, and technology selection through full detailed design. Current projects range in size from 1MW to 500MW with interconnection voltages from 480V to 500kV, including both standalone storage and storage plus other renewables such as wind and solar.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate energy storage technology and provide guidance for clients on the best technology for the application.
- Perform marketing, project development, and proposal development for energy storage projects.
- Regularly meet and correspond with clients or outside personnel.
- Develop scope of work, conceptual design, and execution plans.
- Prepare engineering cost and man-hour estimates and schedules.
- Perform Project Management duties on energy storage consulting projects.
- Perform Lead Engineer duties on multi-discipline energy storage construction projects.
- Provide leadership, guidance, instruction, and mentorship to less experienced team members.
- Prepare or direct the creation of construction documents for the installation of energy storage facility electrical systems.
- Develop or direct the creation of equipment specifications, procurement, and factory acceptance testing of batteries, inverters, battery enclosures, and other miscellaneous equipment associated with energy storage projects.
- Coordinate project design assignments and design teams locally and with other office locations.
- Provide guidance and field engineering support to construction and startup personnel during construction and commissioning.
- This position requires approximately 20% travel to client offices and field project sites, including potential overseas travel.
- Demonstrate progressive design and management responsibilities, including knowledge of construction and commissioning of engineered designs.
- Experience with design scope development, budget preparation, project execution, meeting schedule requirements, and maintaining established budgets.
- Apply intensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices to broad areas of assignments.
- Interpret and develop solutions to complex problems.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or related degree from an ABET-accredited program.
- Or Bachelor of Science in Electrical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
- Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering is a plus.
- 7 years of electrical engineering experience.
- EPC project experience preferred.
- Professional Engineering License (PE) preferred.
- Experience with energy storage in both utility-scale and/or large industrial facilities, including the following design types, is strongly preferred:
- Battery technology/chemistry selection
- Battery sizing
- One-line development
- Site arrangements
- Inverter selection
- Cable ampacity calculations
- Grounding
- Protective relaying and associated systems design and construction administration
- Software experience utilizing SKM Power Tools, ETAP, or similar software is preferred.
- Field construction and commissioning experience is preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, as well as strong analytical and problem-solving skills, are required.
- Previous consulting engineering experience preferred.
- Ability to travel.
Pay
$135,000.00 - $230,000.00 yearly. The expected compensation range is based on individual education, qualifications, prior work experience, and work location. The total annual compensation package includes a base salary and eligibility to participate in a discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
