About the role
General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and manufactures first-of-a-kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. The Herndon, VA office, part of the Electromagnetic Systems group, provides innovative, cutting-edge security solutions for the United States Government, focusing on spacecraft, spacecraft payload, system development, ground control, embedded software, and unique cyber capabilities for Department of Defense and Intelligence Community customers.
Responsibilities
- Participate in derived-requirements definition, system integration, test, and verification for spacecraft and associated flight-payload/ground electronics.
- Work closely with mechanical I&T and spacecraft development teams throughout the full life-cycle of spacecraft systems.
- Perform hands-on integration and test activities, including developing and implementing electrical integration procedures for flight vehicle assembly and Ground Support Equipment (GSE).
- Formulate test plans for component, subsystem, and system-level testing based on engineering ICDs, system requirements, and program requirements; ensure documentation meets compliance, reporting, and safety standards.
- Evaluate engineering solutions within the overall engineering environment and ensure appropriate documentation, testing, maintenance, and updates are completed.
- Communicate with engineering professionals, solution users, and management throughout the solution development cycle; represent the company as a prime technical contact on contracts and projects.
- Determine technical objectives for solutions to advanced technical engineering problems.
- Provide direction and guidance to less experienced staff or teams; may function in an advisory or leadership role.
- Plan and coordinate maintenance of test equipment and technical process standards; support development of new test equipment and process standards to address unique or changing requirements.
- Plan future applications of solutions based on new developments in engineering and technology.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive information and observe all laws, regulations, and applicable obligations.
- Work safely in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution.
- Twelve or more years of experience with a bachelor’s degree, ten or more with a master’s, or seven or more with a PhD; equivalent engineering experience may substitute for education.
- Demonstrated technical expertise and application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice with ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads to meet deadlines or milestones; some project leadership experience.
- Ability to quickly understand and accurately apply new concepts; strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to interface with departments, customers, and government representatives.
- Capability to represent the organization as a prime subject matter technical contact and provide leadership to less experienced professionals.
- Comfort with custom/standard serial protocols; ability to develop custom utilities is a plus.
- Experience with spacecraft integration and test; spacecraft operations experience is a plus.
- Ability to write scripts and analyze data using standard software packages (Excel, MATLAB, gnuplot, etc.).
- Experience testing hardware/software/communication protocols on deeply embedded systems using tools such as logic analyzers and debugging aids.
- Proficiency in C programming language is desirable.
- Experience working within the Linux environment (command line, GCC, Makefiles, shell scripting, etc.) is desirable.
- Customer-focused with ability to work independently or in a team, handle extended hours, and travel as required.
- Willingness to travel in support of spacecraft launch campaigns or supplier facility testing.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret Security Clearance.
Pay
Salary range: $116,480 – $208,505
