About the Role

The Senior Electrical Engineer makes independent decisions on engineering problems and methods, using advanced techniques and extending theories and practices in the field. This role provides supervision and guidance on overall objectives, critical issues, new concepts, and policy matters. The Senior Engineer develops solutions for large and complex engineering projects, supervises and reviews the work of Assistant, Associate, and Engineers, and mentors junior staff. The role involves developing technical expertise, supporting others, and ensuring high-quality project delivery on time and within budget.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure company technical policies and procedures are followed during project execution.
  • Lead the development of design approaches and concepts on assigned projects; request assistance from senior technical staff as needed.
  • Perform engineering studies, design analyses, and assist the project manager in establishing budgets, cost estimates, and project schedules.
  • Review shop drawings, record changes, and communicate directly with suppliers, contractors, and client representatives.
  • Perform on-site inspections during construction and coordinate design requirements with contractors and equipment suppliers.
  • Develop innovative technical solutions and engineering methods to enhance efficiency, quality, and production.
  • Scope, implement, and design plans; supervise these activities as needed.
  • Maintain the highest quality of design and review.
  • Assist Project Managers in coordinating project designs with other disciplines, including attending project meetings.
  • Contribute to proposal writing and client presentations for future work.
  • Provide feedback to Project Managers regarding technical staff performance for mid and end-of-year reviews.
  • Develop a specialized niche within the company’s target markets.
  • Maintain the overall group schedule of project deliverable milestones, billing objectives, and activity codes.
  • Serve as an expert technical resource recognized by clients.
  • Actively participate in professional organizations and client groups to enhance the firm’s technical reputation.
  • Assume other duties as directed by the President, Project Manager, or Chief Engineer.
  • Set technical direction for specific disciplines on projects, determine work tasks and flow, delegate design elements, and retain complex, high-value tasks.
  • Mentor junior staff.
  • Informally supervise CAD Operators, Designers, Junior Associates, Associates, Engineers, and Engineer IIs at the direction of the Project Manager.

Requirements

  • Professionally Licensed Engineer with a Bachelor’s (B.S.) in Engineering and at least 10 years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 6 years of electrical design experience.
  • Professional Engineering License is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Progressive engineering experience working on highly complex tasks and projects of various scales.
  • Experience producing Electrical Engineering deliverables, including design drawings, specifications, basis of design reports, calculations, and site assessment reports.
  • Proficiency in performing Electrical Studies and Calculations (short circuit, selective coordination, arc flash, load flow, voltage drop, photometric lighting, ground grid, etc.).
  • Proficiency in industry-standard engineering software such as AutoCAD or Revit, and specialized design software.
  • Proficiency in ETAP, SKM, or Easy Power.
  • Knowledge of industry codes and standards, including NEC, NESC, ANSI, and IEEE.
  • Broad understanding of other engineering disciplines.
  • Ability to research and interpret engineering codes and standards for non-routine, complex tasks.
  • Proficiency in local, state, and federal regulations related to electrical engineering.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for client and team interactions.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to coordinate and collaborate effectively with internal and cross-disciplinary teams, and external partners.
  • Ability to develop and maintain client relationships.
  • Experience providing technical guidance, training, and feedback to early-career employees.
  • Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to independently solve moderately complex problems with minimal supervision.
  • Previous consulting experience is highly preferred.
  • Previous experience in substation design or Design-Build projects is a plus.
