About the role

Employees in the Senior Engineer position solve problems in engineering areas of specialization without close supervision. Candidates are expected to develop skills and the ability to work with greater independence, applying knowledge of fundamental concepts of electric power systems. This role may require supervisory functions, including assisting team members, collaborating with other departments, suppliers, and manufacturers. The position will develop engineering and technical skills to support various Deriva Energy internal groups in pursuit of electrical and power system projects.

Responsibilities

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity, both within and outside typical responsibility areas.
  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect operations or results of the work group and impact major projects or department outcomes.
  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
  • Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight, independently managing project schedules and interfaces.
  • Competent to design, operate, and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.
  • Possesses and applies fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Five (5) years or more of relevant engineering experience and state registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) OR six (6) years of related work experience without state registration as a Professional Engineer (PE).
  • Must be able and willing to travel to various locations to support area managers’ sites on a frequent basis (up to 10% travel).
  • Must be able to respond to Electrical Engineering & Plant Support outside normal working hours (24/7 on-call rotation).
  • Must have obtained a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
  • Must live within a reasonable commute to the designated Deriva Energy facility in Charlotte, NC.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.

Skills

  • Engineering skills related to power system modeling, distribution, and/or transmission electric systems.
  • Understanding of renewable technologies such as solar, wind, and battery storage.
  • Proficient in engineering theories and principles.
  • Practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Principles of project management.
  • Experience in modeling studies, testing, and reports (PSS/e, SKM, MathCad, ASPEN, PSCAD, PSLF).
  • Breaker trip response and PRC-004 Report Analysis.
  • Knowledge of communications protocols (Modbus, Serial & DNP).
  • Understanding of SEL (Schweitzer Engineering Labs) Control Element Settings Ranges and Accuracies.
  • Experience with SEL (Schweitzer Engineering Labs) Relays and Meters.
  • Experience in high voltage and substation maintenance.
  • Experience or proven understanding of transformers, HV & LV cables, and Inverter-Based Resources (SEL relays & GE "L" series relays preferred).
  • Experience in wind farm or solar farm electrical collection systems, grid connections, inverters, and wind turbines.
  • Support compliance with NERC Reliability Standards applicable to Generator Owners and Generator Operators.
  • Conduct root cause analysis for electrical equipment failures and develop corrective actions.

Working Conditions

  • Position is located in Charlotte, NC.
  • Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period.
  • Hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the designated Deriva Energy facility.
  • Must be able to respond to O&M Support outside normal working hours (team on-call rotation).
