Senior Director, Platform Engineering
About the role
The Senior Director of Platform Engineering at Altana will lead the foundational technology that supports the entire Altana engineering organization. This includes the cloud infrastructure that powers our products and the developer experience that enables rapid and secure software delivery.
Responsibilities
Define and execute a multi-year technical strategy for Platform Engineering, focusing on high-leverage work and long-term architectural goals.
Design, manage, and secure multi-cloud infrastructure, including data platforms for large-scale data processing, analytics, and machine learning.
Own the developer experience, including CI/CD platforms, build systems, and tooling, ensuring a smooth and efficient workflow for the engineering organization.
Lead the adoption of AI-assisted and agentic development, integrating AI coding harnesses and agents into CI/CD pipelines and promoting their use across the development lifecycle.
Establish best practices for monitoring, incident response, automation, and performance optimization, ensuring high availability and security in production environments.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align platform investments with business objectives, communicate trade-offs clearly, and represent Platform Engineering to senior leadership.
Manage distributed teams across multiple time zones, fostering a culture of shared ownership, resilience, and accountability.
Recruit top-tier talent and act as a recruiter, fostering professional development and addressing underperformance constructively.
Requirements
Experience building, leading, and scaling platform and developer experience organizations, particularly in rapidly scaling environments.
Significant experience developing or managing complex engineering systems, with a focus on developer experience and platform engineering.
Direct, hands-on experience with AI-assisted and agentic development, including AI coding harnesses, agent-first workflows, and coding agents.
Strong software engineering fundamentals, including the ability to design well-architected systems and lead from the front.
Production experience with cloud platforms, containerization, and infrastructure as code.
Experience designing tooling and patterns that work across multiple clouds or isolated/compliance-constrained environments.
Qualifications
10+ years of real-world experience developing or managing complex engineering systems.
Proven track record of driving developer experience and productivity across an organization, with measurable before/after outcomes.
Deep expertise with CI/CD systems and a demonstrated ability to scale them, especially in a monorepo at scale.
Strong sense of shared ownership, collaboration, and excellent communication skills.
