Senior Director, Platform Engineering
About the role
The Senior Director of Platform Engineering at Altana will lead the foundational technology that supports the entire Altana engineering organization. This includes the cloud infrastructure that powers our products and the developer experience that enables rapid and secure software delivery.
Responsibilities
Define and execute a multi-year technical strategy for Platform Engineering, focusing on high-leverage work and long-term architectural goals.
Design, manage, and secure multi-cloud infrastructure, including data platforms for large-scale data processing, analytics, and machine learning.
Own the cloud infrastructure and tooling that the engineering organization relies on, driving continuous improvement in developer workflows and accelerating the software development lifecycle.
Lead build-vs-buy decisions and platform investments, including adopting tools, vendors, and open-source technologies across the software development lifecycle.
Establish AI-first, agent-first development practices, integrating AI-assisted and agent-generated code into CI/CD, code review, and release pipelines at scale.
Ensure operational excellence by establishing best practices for monitoring, incident response, automation, and performance optimization.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align platform investments with business objectives and communicate trade-offs clearly to stakeholders.
Manage distributed teams and foster a collaborative culture, recruiting top-tier talent and addressing underperformance constructively.
Requirements
Experience building, leading, and scaling platform and developer experience organizations, especially in rapidly scaling environments. Proven track record of driving developer experience and productivity. Direct, hands-on experience with AI-assisted and agentic development. Strong software engineering fundamentals and production experience with cloud platforms, containerization, and infrastructure as code.
Qualifications
10+ years of real-world experience developing or managing complex engineering systems.
Significant experience owning developer experience, platform engineering, or the build/test/release pipeline end to end.
Proven track record of improving developer workflows and increasing productivity.
Deep expertise with CI/CD systems and a history of scaling them, particularly in a monorepo environment.
Production experience with cloud platforms and large-scale infrastructure supporting ML/AI-enabled products.
Experience designing tooling and patterns that work across multiple clouds or isolated/compliance-constrained environments.
Skills
Strong software engineering fundamentals and a track record of designing well-architected systems.
Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
Expertise with CI/CD systems (Buildkite, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI).
Understanding of AI-assisted and agentic development concepts and their impact on code review, testing, and pipeline design.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a collaborative disposition.
