Position Summary

As Senior Director, Merchandising – Furniture (D71), you will lead one of Walmart's most strategically significant and transformative commercial opportunities. Furniture is one of the most compelling growth opportunities in General Merchandise. In a category navigating significant industry headwinds, your mission is to build the strategy, the team, and the ecosystem that transforms Walmart into the undisputed destination for furniture customers. You will lead a portfolio of Director-level leaders responsible for business development, strategic partnerships, premium assortment, last mile solutions, and innovative store experience – driving a unified strategy that connects world-class store execution with digital acceleration, marketplace growth, and the kind of supplier relationships that no competitor can replicate.

About the role

You will set the strategic direction for D71 Furniture, aligning it with Walmart's corporate priorities and the market opportunity. You will build the partner ecosystem by owning executive-level relationships with major strategic partners, such as third-party retailers, last-mile providers, brand partners, and marketplace sellers. You will lead a high-performing team of Director-level leaders, managing, developing, and inspiring them to drive sales growth, profitability, market share, and a seamless customer experience across all channels.

Responsibilities

  • Setting strategic direction: Owning the multi-year vision transformation plan for D71 Furniture, aligned to Walmart's corporate priorities and the real opportunity the market presents.

  • Building the partner ecosystem: Owning executive-level relationships with major strategic partners – 3rd party retailers, last-mile providers, brand partners, and marketplace sellers.

  • Leading a high-performing team: Managing, developing, and inspiring a portfolio of Director-level leaders, along with their direct reports.

  • Driving omni-channel growth: Integrating digital acceleration (SEO, CVR, PDP quality, site experience), store experience, and marketplace strategy into a connected growth engine that drives sales growth, profitability, market share, and a seamless customer experience across all channels.

  • Championing cross-functional alignment: Partnering with technology, marketing, supply chain, site merchandising, Sam's Club, and global sourcing to unlock sustainable share gains.

  • Raising the bar on culture: Building a team culture grounded in customer obsession, data-driven decision-making, accountability, and continuous transformation.

  • Delivering Executional Excellence & Agility: Manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced retail environment, driving alignment, accountability, and flawless execution across channels and teams.

  • Utilizing Customer & Trend Acumen: Deep understanding of customer behavior, trends, and competitive dynamics, with the ability to translate insights into compelling assortments and category strategies.

  • Applying Analytical & Financial Expertise: Proven ability to leverage data, financial metrics, and business insights to identify opportunities, manage performance, and make informed merchandising decisions.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of merchandising, retail, or related commercial leadership experience.

  • 3+ years leading a team of Directors or senior-level leaders in a complex, multi-category retail environment.

  • Demonstrated track record of building and executing commercial strategy at scale.

  • Experience with omni-channel retail, digital merchandising, and/or marketplace platforms.

  • Strong financial acumen with experience in P&L ownership, forecasting, and gap planning.

  • Executive communication skills with the ability to influence at the VP and C-suite level.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business or related field and 5 years’ experience in merchandising or related field OR 7 years’ experience in merchandising or related field.

  • 4 years’ experience with direct responsibility for profit and loss (P&L) statements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in home furnishings, hardlines, or large-parcel retail categories.

  • Background in business development, strategic partnerships, or platform/marketplace models.

  • Familiarity with lifecycle management, supply chain strategy, or global sourcing.

  • Track record of building new organizational capabilities within a large enterprise.

The annual salary range for this position is $130,000.00 - $260,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include : Stock
