Senior Director, Marketing Communications
About the role
Reporting to the Vice President, Communications, the Senior Director, Marketing Communications crafts and executes strategic internal and external communications campaigns to elevate Yale University’s profile and thought leadership presence. This role empowers Yale to actively position itself as a thought leader in national and global areas of interest, ensuring all messaging and initiatives align with the University’s mission.
The Senior Director develops and implements several marketing communications campaigns annually, including brand management, media relations, internal communication, storytelling, and digital/social/multimedia platforms, with a focus on generative AI to support strategies and measurement. The role is integral to the Office of Public Affairs and Communications (OPAC) Senior Leadership team.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement strategic marketing plans for digital and print communications, including social media, and lead all branding initiatives.
- Direct communication strategies based on audience preference and analyze client group communication needs.
- Oversee the production of campaign-related marketing materials and execute paid campaigns across print, digital, and broadcast media.
- Act as executive producer of content, including articles, video, and photo galleries, partnering with Editorial, Social Media, Photography, Videography, and Brand teams.
- Manage relationships with key vendor partners and provide consultative services to Yale schools, socializing branding strategies and guidelines.
- Lead a data-driven process to identify key messages, stakeholders, and audiences, and proactively tell compelling stories.
- Develop benchmarking criteria and track the effectiveness of communications campaigns.
- Ensure consistency across visual, written, and digital materials and oversee exterior marketing initiatives.
- Oversee long-range and short-range planning for coordinated communications channels.
- Provide strategic oversight and mentoring for Marketing & Communications teams, setting unit goals and managing the annual non-salary budget.
- Collaborate with stakeholders across the university on fundraising, stewardship, and event-related initiatives.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree and ten or more years of relevant experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Demonstrated ability to conceive and write material for internal and external audiences with editorial precision.
- Exceptional communication skills, advanced writing and editing ability, and experience advancing strategic objectives.
- Understanding of generative AI for communications, digital/social media, user experience, and marketing strategies.
- Advanced knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, database software, and data analysis.
- Excellent project and process management skills, with a track record of error-free, on-time delivery.

- Ability to manage multiple projects to deadline amidst competing priorities and work independently or collaboratively.
- Resourcefulness in problem-solving, agility in mastering complex topics, and ability to navigate a complex organization.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Yale, its organization, alumni, students, and faculty, or communications experience at an academic institution.
Pay
Salary range: $120,000.00 - $225,000.00.
