At United Way of New York City (UWNYC), our Legal team plays a vital role in protecting and advancing our mission by providing strategic counsel, managing organizational risk, and ensuring compliance across the organization. We're seeking a Senior Director, Legal Counsel to support the organization's legal, governance, compliance, and enterprise risk management functions. This role will partner with leadership to provide practical legal guidance, strengthen organizational policies, and help ensure UWNYC operates with integrity, accountability, and excellence.

Salary: $115,193 – $120,000
This is a fixed-term position for six months from date of hire with potential for extension.

About the Role

United Way of New York City (UWNYC) seeks an experienced legal professional to support the organization's legal and compliance affairs. Reporting to the Senior Legal Counsel, the Senior Director, Legal Counsel will support contracts, legal research, compliance, governance, procurement, and day-to-day legal matters while providing practical guidance to senior attorneys, management, and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Advise senior attorneys, management, and staff on nonprofit, compliance, contracting, governance, intellectual property, and litigation matters.
  • Research and analyze legal issues and support day-to-day legal activities.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, including sponsorship, grant, consulting, non-disclosure, license, and release agreements.
  • Assist with organizational compliance, including lobbying, regulatory, public policy, and charitable solicitation requirements.
  • Prepare Board and committee materials and support Board governance activities.
  • Support procurement-related legal matters and organizational initiatives.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments affecting nonprofit organizations and advise senior attorneys and staff as appropriate.
  • Handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.

Qualifications

  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited U.S. law school and admission to practice in New York State.
  • Minimum of six years of legal experience, preferably in a law firm, government, or nonprofit environment.
  • Experience across corporate, nonprofit, and/or government matters.
  • Strong contract drafting and negotiation experience.
  • Excellent analytical, research, drafting, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage confidential information and multiple priorities.
  • Strong judgment, initiative, and ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Pay

$115,193 – $120,000

Schedule

This is a fixed-term position for six months from date of hire with potential for extension.
