About the role

The Senior Director, Corporate Counsel – Energy will support Digital Realty’s energy and sustainability leadership teams, shaping and executing the company’s long-term energy strategy. Reporting to the General Counsel, this role advises on legal and regulatory matters related to energy procurement, renewable energy sourcing, and utility contracting.

Responsibilities

  • Advise on legal and regulatory matters related to energy procurement, renewable energy sourcing, and utility contracting across AMER, EMEA, and APAC.
  • Participate in cross-functional working groups to identify, formulate, and execute strategic transactions.
  • Draft, negotiate, and close complex energy agreements, including power purchase agreements (PPAs), utility service agreements, interconnection agreements, and development agreements.
  • Provide strategic counsel on regulatory frameworks affecting energy procurement and project development, such as FERC, ISO/RTO rules, and international energy regulations.
  • Partner with energy operations, investments, sustainability, procurement, real estate, and finance teams to structure and execute transactions that align with business, legal, and environmental objectives.
  • Identify and mitigate legal and regulatory risks associated with energy sourcing.
  • Manage outside counsel and budgets for certain specialized energy and infrastructure matters.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal stakeholders and external partners, serving as a collaborative, solution-oriented business partner.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school; admitted to practice and in good standing.
  • 7+ years of experience at a law firm and/or in-house legal department, with a strong focus on energy transactions, utility regulation, renewable procurement, and infrastructure development.
  • Proven track record negotiating and closing PPAs, utility contracts, and large-scale energy infrastructure agreements.
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to align legal strategy with commercial goals.
  • Industry experience in the technology, cloud services, or data center sectors is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with clients and team members.
  • Hands-on, proactive, and solution-oriented, with a strong comfort level using technology.
  • Strong organizational skills with the capability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and deliver high-quality work with attention to detail and accuracy in all work product.

$240,000 to $260,000 annually.
