About the role
The Senior Interior Design Director is responsible for setting the vision, standards, and execution of interior design across multiple publishing imprints: Berkley, Dutton, Putnam, Tarcher, Avery, Tiny Rep, and Plume. This role oversees a high-volume publishing program of approximately 600+ 1 color and 4 color titles per year while directly managing a team of 11 designers and associate design directors.
Responsibilities
- Lead, and mentor a team of designers and associate design directors, fostering a high-performing, collaborative environment
- Allocate and balance workload across the team, ensuring efficiency and sustainable pacing
- Review, guide, and approve design work, ensuring alignment with imprint identity and market positioning
- Partner with publishers, editors, and authors to shape and execute creative vision
- Serve as the primary design liaison to Editorial, Production, Production Editorial, Managing Editorial, and external partners
- Collaborate and lead on workflow improvements, art processes, and production efficiencies
- Manage freelance and external vendor relationships
- Responsible for designing approximately 30 titles
Qualifications
- 10+ years as book designer (or similar) with experience in managing imprints and high volume
- Experience supervising and art directing a design teams with 6+ staff
- Proficiency in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator)
- Solid understanding of typography, layout, color theory
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines
- Excellent knowledge of prepress and print reproduction
