About the role
The Senior Design Engineer will provide technical leadership in the design, development, and sustainment of fractional horsepower electric motors and related motion products. This role is a hands-on technical contributor responsible for executing product designs, supporting manufacturing, and driving continuous improvement across existing and new motor platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Product Design & Development
- Design and develop fractional horsepower electric motors (e.g., BLDC, PMDC, stepper, AC motors) from concept through production release.
- Generate and review engineering calculations, CAD models, drawings, specifications, and bills of material.
- Apply sound engineering principles related to magnetics, thermal performance, mechanical integrity, and materials.
- Analysis, Testing & Validation
- Perform and interpret electromagnetic, thermal, and mechanical analyses to optimize motor performance and reliability.
- Support prototype builds, testing, and validation activities; analyze results and implement design improvements.
- Absorb and implement lessons learned from product qualification, life testing, and compliance testing.
- Manufacturing & Sustaining Support
- Partner with Manufacturing Engineering to ensure designs are manufacturable, repeatable, and cost effective (DFM/DFA).
- Provide engineering support for production issues, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
- Participate in value engineering and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Cross Functional Collaboration
- Support customer applications by reviewing requirements, evaluating feasibility, and assisting with technical solutions.
- Collaborate effectively with Quality, Supply Chain, and Sales teams to resolve technical issues and support product launches.
- Participate in annual budget discussions and cost reduction projects.
- Mentor and coach junior and mid-level engineers, promoting best practices in design, documentation, and problem solving.
Core Competencies
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills
- Hands on, detail oriented engineering mindset
- Strong communication with both technical and non technical stakeholders
- Able to manage multiple priorities effectively
- Collaborative and team focused approach balancing results aside mentorship
Education Requirements
A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
Preferred Experience or Skills
- 10+ years of engineering experience, with a strong focus on electric motor or rotating machinery design.
- Experience with Autodesk CAD tools (e.g., Inventor, Fusion) and engineering analysis methods.
- Familiarity with electric motor fundamentals: windings, magnets, laminations, bearings, insulation systems.
- Working knowledge of applicable standards (UL, IEC, NEMA, CE, RoHS).
- Master’s degree in engineering.
- Experience supporting products in production and field environments.
- Exposure to motor drives, controls, or integrated motion systems.
- Experience in industrial, medical, robotics, or automation markets.
