About the role
The Upbound Group is seeking a Senior Database Engineer to oversee all databases within the company’s IT environments, both on-prem and cloud. This role is based in Plano, Texas.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain cloud-based databases (AWS Aurora PostgreSQL & MySQL)
- Analyze existing database systems and recommend improvements
- Build and maintain automation scripts for installation, management, configuration, monitoring, upgrading, and patching of data infrastructure
- Assist application development & data services teams in designing new database programs
- Maintain and monitor databases to ensure optimized performance and cost savings
- Perform debugging procedures and resolve conflicts
- Mentor database administrators and provide SME support
- Document processes related to database design, configuration, and performance
- Stay updated on developments and best practices in database engineering
- Support existing data platforms teams, as needed, and act as an escalation point
- Plan and manage technical projects involving other teams and communicate effectively
- Recognize and understand technology impacts within the business
- Provide technical input to solution development plans and concept documents
- Contribute to technical research on new technologies, processes, or procedures and document findings
- Configure and administer Oracle & SQL Server database servers (plus)
- Perform project management duties as assigned
Other Responsibilities
- Interact with other teams within the Digital Infrastructure organization, Spend Management Organization, Managed Infrastructure Services provider (onshore and offshore), and various contracted IT resources
- Meet frequently with various business units and stakeholders to assess and evaluate information technology needs
- Must have a strong and outgoing personality and be able to build relationships with technology and business teams across the company
- Interact routinely with vendors, service providers, consultants/advisors, cloud service providers, and professional organizations
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Business, or related field AND 7+ years of relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience with on-prem and cloud architectures
- Experience with database high availability concepts and methodologies
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, configure, and administer databases on-prem and DBaaS
- Experience in scripting in any language, preferably Python or Bash
- Demonstrated ability with automation using any tools, preferably Ansible and Terraform
- Demonstrated ability with GitHub/GitLab, CI/CD pipelines, DevOps methodologies, and DB source version control tools such as Liquibase
- Demonstrated ability to implement new technologies effectively and demonstrate quality and effectiveness in work documentation and organization
- Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Experience with PostgreSQL monitoring and performance tuning tools
- Proficiency in SQL Tuning and experience with writing queries and stored procedures
- Able to translate complex technical information across all levels of the organization
- Able to multitask; team player with a focus on results and fostering partnerships with business units
- Strong, proven problem-solving skills and ability to identify, analyze, and resolve problems, driving solutions through to completion
- Familiarity with NoSQL Databases and Data Lake technologies (plus)
